Caged Feeder - Is this true? (1 Viewer)

I’ve been interested in getting a caged feeder similar to this one, as most of my feeding is done in the trees. I was reading some online reviews and a few people wrote in that when something spooked the birds they returned to find dead birds in the bottom of the cage. Almost like the song birds were so spooked that they hit their heads on the cage and died. Is this true? I see so many on the market that I find it hard to believe so many would sell if this were a possible threat.

I've had one problem with this type of feeder. One that I am aware of.

I kept hearing the fluttering of feathers but couldn't see anything on the feeder. When I stepped off the deck and walked around the feeder, there was a finch whose head had gotten stuck in one of the portals. On mine, apparently there was a bar that went across the whole inside of the tube and the feeder hole was quite close to it so the finches head got stuck inside and under one of the bars. It took me quite a few minutes to get it out carefully and it did fly off shortly thereafter but I emptied the feeder and never used it again.

From what I have heard, birds indeed cannot scramble when scared, and either get hurt, or don't flee in time to avoid being snatched by predators. Also, I've heard that squirrels just shake the seed out, then go eat it off the ground.
