Still no Common Lizard on the Wirral but the sun brought out Common Toad in ridiculous numbers. I was doing my WEBS count and there were Toads everywhere, including pairs, in amplexus, in puddles you could walk through in flipflops without getting your feet wet.

Chris

Two Grass snakes at Little Budworth in Cheshire today, my first of the year. Earliest here was March 3rd around 2004 ish for comparison.

I'm probably off down Bournemouth way next weekend. Do green and wall lizards come out later as they're are used to sunnier climes? I intend to have a look for the rarer species as well.

In a normal year, Green is active from early April, Wall from Mar. This isn't a normal year, mind.

The Wall lizards are out 12 months of the year Steve. You wont have any problems with them. I saw my first of the year on January 30th and I wasn't the first! The Greens don't seem to be out yet and there are few other reptiles about yet. In saying that it has warmed up and a bit of sun this weekend could bring them out.

If you hear any more please let me know. Hoping this warm weather has brought them out. Looks like it'll be sunny - although not that warm this weekend - so I'm still planning to give it a go.

If the wind is from the north at all it won't matter as the steep slope faces south and will be sheltered.

Nipped down to Dorset to give Steve Babbs a hand looking for Green Lizards this morning. Luckily one of the locals put me on two and one of them hung around for him.

Steve then showed me a new site (to me) so by the end of the morning we had Slow-worm and Wall, Green, Common and Sand Lizards.
