Today at the Moors

A full hide late morning with plenty of the work party crew, from both past and present. Good banter and a nice selection of 'brand new scopes and bins courtesy of http://www.birders-store.co.uk/. on show.

Both the Flashes (Bob O) and Moors (Clive L)were covered from before first light.
Andy P took over the Flashes and plenty of people were scattered about most of the day.

A quiet start at the Moors, but by 10am there was plenty to see.
The snipe numbers have very obviously increased. With at least 30 on 'snipe island' At 9.10 a flock of birds from the Flashes dropped in, this included many shoveler and the avocet. Good numbers of duck were present, mostly concentrated along the southern end of the Moors and Amy's marsh. A bit of Vis Mig involved small numbers of skylark, meadow pipit and redwing.
Species counts for Moors
GCG 5, little grebe 7, cormorant 11, greylag 28, gadwall 5 (2prs + male) same as last years early autumn birds. wigeon 2 fems, shoveler 58, teal 6, Pochard 14 ( 8 males + 6 fems included the fem with the blue 'saddle' on its bill), tufted 20, GOOSANDER female arrived at 1.18pm and flew out 20 mins later - this was an adult female as opposed to the imm fem at the Flashes 15th Oct. coot 90, water rail saw 3 heard 6 others. Flashes first thing.

Arrived at the Flashes while it was still dark. Emerging from the gloom were 18 Curlew, 1 Avocet, 1 Common Snipe, lots of Shoveler who were starting to 'circle feed', Teal and loads of BHG. 25 Starling lined the wires at the back.
All was well until some clot over at the sewerage works slammed a metal door, which sounded like a rifle shot, and off went the birds, with most of them relocating to the Moors.:t:
Ex pics from the new 'tog' Upstarts 3:)

This afternoon at the Flashes.
First thing I noticed and heard was a murm...... of starlings, I don't use that silly word, so I will call them a load of starlings or a massive flock. Well there wasn't that many, but between 400 and 500 were perched around the sewage works and in the north fields. Many of these are probably fresh in, arriving with redwings over the last week or so. The Avocet and several shoveler had returned from the Moors.
With the recent rise in water by about 6 - 8 cm in a few days, the Teal and now gyrating shovelers are spending more time on the 2nd Flash. Small numbers of snipe and a flock of lapwings were the other notable species.
Species count at Flashes
counts earlier from Andy P were :Teal 87 (+6 Moors = 93), Shoveler 3 (+58 Moors = 61).
Snipe 3, lapwing 45, Avocet, Coot 9 almost certainly increased with the increase in water level to 0.4
stock dove,

Moors East Hide 17:10 - 18:30
Four cattle were on Amy's Marsh and one in front of the hide which eventually splashed her way across to snipe island and beyond, so nothing there. The islands and central water was full of Canada and Greylag Geese.

Final count at 18:20
Barnacle Goose 1; Canada Goose 138 (more may have been lurking behind reeds);Greylag Goose 29; Little Grebe 3; Great Crested Grebe 7; Shoveler 9 (4 male 3 female); Grey Heron 3; Teal 2; Lesser Black-backed Gull 1; Black-headed Gull; Cormorants 5 (missed them off the hide book); Coots; Call Duck 1; Mallards (various!!)

We were told that the kingfisher had been passing the concrete hide regularly but only alighted on a post once, and that the water rail was performing well.
By the time we arrived at the hide the ones opposite were apparently empty and stayed that way and the car was alone when we returned to it.

Two more pics of the Barnacle Goose with a Canada Goose for comparison.

pics
1 is the jack on snipe Island
2. jack snipe in front of hide - see bazooka boy Chris's after looking at this one.
3. No apologies for showing wigeon, unlike many sites in the Midlands we just don't get them that often.
4. For anybody not familiar with the reserve this is a picture of 'snipe island. Today there were 14 species seen on it.
5. This shows the southern part of Amy's marsh. Snipe island is at the front right. Snipe are now gathering on the island in front of the sand martin bank.

For all those that know Dave W (woodchat) - and those that don't know him, I am sure you will wish him all the best. He has had to go into hospital for an operation, on a burst appendix, no mean thing:eek!:. He did say he probably wouldn't be able to make the November work party - not much of an excuse 8-P.
Joking apart get well soon mate.B :) john
ps we'll try not to find too many rarities while you are out of action kid:t:
