Andy's field sketches (1 Viewer)

Well here's yesterday's and today's offerings. just a quick post,
alot to do today:flyaway:

Hi Andrew

What superb sketches, and drawings throughout this thread. Lots of praises from me too. :t:

It shows that the be able to draw birds sitting at all angles is a test on your artistic skills. That would come from a lot of observation and field work

Just love the rooks and the Woodies. o:)

What can I say Andy?!!! **&^ %$ £$%( << !! etc etc (that's abstract for everything that everyone else has said, just wanted to be different o:D

Had a great weekend down here in deepest darkest Devon.

On Sat22nd , I took the kids Blackberry picking again. This seems to be
one of their favorite activities at the moment. I am certainly not
complaining as it gets them into the countryside and away from the
Tele!!!

The Highlight for them though was standing on the bonnet
of Dad's Landrover in a field so that we could reach some
extra high Sloe's . My Wife's been Blogging about what
we are doing with them once we get them back home.
There's something very rewarding about gathering from
mother nature's free bounty!!
check my wifes blog

whilst out though of course I couldn't resist taking in the amount
of birdlife around and although not having my sketchbook with me I managed
to take a few rough snaps.

When at home I recorded what we saw in the sketch book using the photo's
and my memory. hope you like.List as follows :Robins in the hedge just above
our heads as we picked, amazing how close they will come if you r quiet!.
Lots of linnet Flocks, the usual buzzard pair and this years young.
A lovely pair of wheatears in the stubble field along with a pheasant picking around
by a Hazel hedge with accompanying Magie and woodies. and the highlight
for me a female Pere winging her way over the field. Watched some crows,
a most spectacular aerobatic display as they twisted and turned dive
bombing each other. Then using the Landy as a stalking Horse stroke hide
we managed to get quite close to some Skylarks befor they inevitably
flushed and put in further off in front.

We then drove home doing a detour past the tidal rd . (see Sept issue of
Birdwatching in the Go birding September section. My little fav patch
is featured!) There alas we only saw a nice little Common Sand and some
Mallard wheeling around. Oh and the usual large group of gulls.
Ther were alot of people using the river so not much birds in evidence.

also I've included some Barn Owl Sketches form last week
at Stupid o'clock in the morning on the 17th

Brilliant drawings and an extremely entertaining account Andrew - fun for all the family! Went to 'wife's blog' - good eco-effort and really interesting content - keep at it. Keep posting the link, please - I'm a nosey b*gger and love to see what folk are up to!!!

I love looking at your sketchbook pages, not only are they beautiful, they are entertaining. The barn owl is superb, very geometrically accurate (something for me to study!)

Beautiful barnies and a nice account of a nice day. Family time is the best and if you can combine it with a bit of birding, sketching and pic taking it just makes it even better!

Superb pictoral diary of what looks like a great trip. Technically excellent stuff, but as mentioned the drawings really pull you into the experience...

Abu Dhabi Frustrations!

Hi everyone . Its been a while ..., Sorry about that.

Having been super busy on a design project I am involved with, I havn't
had time to check in and update this thread.
That however changed becuase of said design project moving on to
its next stage. I had to go to Abu Dhabi at the begining of last week to
meet with the clients and so had an opportunity to possibly see
some foriegn species. I tried to track down someone to meet
whilst over there but because of the tight scedule I was on
it was difficult to find any windows of useable free time to go
birding.

I had alot of time to kill hanging around in the Hotel which was frustrating
as hell!! knowing that there were all those fabulous Middle eastern
gem's out there, and the autumn migrants coming to the area.

Having said that I did get a small amount of sketching done from the
the boundries of the hotel and a brief trip to Al Ain to get references
for a commission. It was a successful trip on many fronts and I got
to see old friends again. It was'nt without incident either, I managed to get
blood poisoning from a mosquito bite on my finger! My hand swelled
up and I had a track line running up to my armpit!!
To say my manager ,who was with me was concerned is a bit of an understatement.:eek!:

All turned out fine and Loaded with antibiotics and a few painkillers it went down in no time;)

Here are some of the sketches.

These were done through the scope from my room balcony looking
across a tidal river and from around the hotel gardens. Lots
of small,Kentish, Ringed , Grey and lesser Sand plovers and other waders,
Herons and Egrets. Also a number of gulls that I think were
winter Great Black headed gulls...?

The estuary birds were at a real distance which was'nt ideal.
The last page of this set was at a fort near Al Ain .
The Little Green Bee eaters were an absolute joy to watch.
A lovely Great Grey Shrike. Lots of Doves , sparrows and a noisy
bunch of Grey Francolin.

Here are another set to look at.
These were done on Hotel Stationary paper as I got to the end
of my sketch pad. Luckily noticed befor setting off to
Al Ain so raided the provided stock from the room!

A little Kentish plover must have felt sorry for me on the last day
and appeared on the hotels Sterile man made beach in front of
my room. I shot down there as quickly as pos to sketch and photograph
him. He was a very confiding little chap and I got quite close.

Needless to say I got a few strange looks from the few people on the
beach because of my interest in this little brown and white bird!:-O

Never in the history of "The Shangri-La Hotel" will their delightful headed notepaper be put to better use.
Andrew - the quality of this fieldwork is quite simply out of this world. I am in absolute awe of your talent and ability to see. Superb.
Hope the hand has settled down - not that it appears to have hampered you in any way (well, drawing-wise anyway). Magic work from the wizard!

I couldn't agree more with Tim if I tried. Your field work is always so assured and it appears effortless (I know it's not but it appears to be). I will eagerly await the finished work from the trip.

A-men to that! Particularly love the bee-eaters flying away and looking back - so true to life!

These are amazing Andy!
I'm glad you are back and healthy!!
Actually I wanted to ask you of the progress of Bonelli's picture,
but having caught a cold last week I'm still trying to recover and I
haven't any time to look on the Forum.
Absolutely sublime work Andy!!
