I saw this bird in Lake Superior in Duluth, MN, USA two days ago. I think it is a red-breasted merganser? Is it normal for the beak to appear dark like this or is it just artifact? Thanks!

Hi,

It is a Hooded Merganser. Note the shorter black bill (Red-breasted and Common would show a longer all red bill), among other things.

I can't really see color very well (colorblind), but I think young/eclipse males look very similar to females in coloration.
