It took three years only because I visited it once or twice a year it probably took less than 20 "contact hours" with the brushes in total.
It sounds like a good idea to step up the challenge into a more detailed piece. It would be doable as long as I don't spend too much time in the planning stage.
On the other hand I like the format of this daily sketch project. I'm learning a lot and getting more confident because of the "instant gratification" nature of it (most of the time anyway). But yeah, I shall take advantage of the new confidence and aim for something better... Soon.
The oil pastel took me a day (six hours or so, spread over a Saturday) ; the watercolour took about two hours
