Mallorca 2017 (3 Viewers)

Another very quiet morning at the Cap. A single migrant Common Kestrel flew out to sea. Much later, a Hobby did the same thing and just as I was leaving, a Sub-Alpine Warbler popped out of the bush right in front of me, a bit of a surprise but the date is pretty normal I think. Mike

Just a note on sea-watching, it is all very quiet out there at the moment, there are no Balearic Shearwaters and only a handful of Scopoli’s. The first Gannets of the autumn should appear soon. Mike

Good shout martin, looks to be 5/6cm long so a big one unless anyone else comes up with something different.
Hoopoe showing the underside, Serin both son real and Nightingale salbufera.
Steve.

A couple of rubbish distant record shots of the Marsh Sandpiper which was at the Depuradora from 17:00 on 17 Sept until at least 13:00 on 19 Sept - I wondered if it might have been the same bird reported from the old salinettes a couple of days before? The water level at the salinettes went up between 15 and 16 Sept and might have become unsuitable for feeding? Also a couple of shots of the Fudge Duck present at Ses Pardes for several days from at least 12 Sept.
Graham

Walked from Camp de Mar to Port Andratx ... and back today. Mainly looking up at small birds flitting through the pines. However ... saw an Egyptian Vulture adult this morning and a subadult this afternoon. Also a Black Vulture with the latter bird, and a third, smaller raptor harassing them ... perhaps Booted or Bonelli's. Not bad for the first day!

A quick seawatch late afternoon produced double figures of Scopoli’s Shearwaters and a few Balearics too. This was from my local lighthouse in Porto Petro, the east coast being the best location for Shearwaters and other seabirds. Mike

A small influx of Hawfinch around Porto Pollensa. They flew off towards Mortitx which is a good place to see them. Also the hide at Son Real by the drinking pool is a great place to catch up with this elusive species so let’s hope this year will see good numbers of this beautiful bird for us all to enjoy. Hawfinch are an irruptive species and I dont know of any seen yet in 2017 so maybe we can get them on our year lists after all. Mike

thanks to you mike for taking the time to look thtough it.

QUOTE=Mike Montier;3627635]Hi Craig. Thanks for your usual high standard report, some fabulous photographs of some super birds. I very much enjoyed reading it. Mike[/QUOTE]

Max also saw a Melodious Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat and best of all, a Short-toed snake eagle hunting low over the fields in Pollensa. It flew off, complete with a snake, towards Boquer so it may be lingering for a while. Some great birds out there at the moment. Mike

Another Bluethroat morning

At least 8 Bluethroats at Depadura this morning. They were popping up everywhere. In the field nearby R.l.partridge Thekla lark, Short toed lark and Meadow pipit. A dead Glossy ibis was on one of the rafts. Still good numbers of hirundines c300 perched on wires.
Later at S'aberador 2 more bluethroats and Moustache warbler showing well.

Great report Craig, most enjoyable.
Viper and Ringed Plover at salbufera and flower from the Boquer.
Steve.

Steve.
The snake most often seen in s'Albufera is the Viperine snake. There are some other introduced snakes (e.g. Montpellier's snake) but, as far as I am aware, no vipers (i.e. adders). If anyone knows for sure, I'd be interested.

Thanks martin,
Viperine is what i ment, thought they were the same!!!
Curlew and Spotted Red. on the 8th sept. Whinchat on the 9th sept. all salbufera.
Steve.
