Finally got one right! Thanks for all your help. Can anyone help me with seperating the fem pochard with scaup? I have seen a scaup before but having trouble seperating the two!
 
Female Scaup and Pochard are tricky, Andy. I find the easiest thing is the head. The beak on a Scaup is always pale blue, and the base of the bill is normally dominant white.
When not (juvenile), Pochard will tend to have pale patches all over the face, whereas for juv. Scaup the only pale patch is a neat 'C' on the cheek.
