Friday at reserve

Will need to check what the record count for Ringed Plover is at Upton Warren.

JTB now reports a fourth brood of Avocet with a total of 8 chicks.
Dave J had a chick on south side of 2nd Flash Right Island. Still 4 lapwing sitting ..they are having a hard time with buzzards taking the new brood to right of hide.
Can't add much to Dave's sightings.

The conditions throughout the day were excellent for migrants especially waders. Unfortunately the birds only moved through in the morning from 9am until 10.30 ish. .
As with other sites such as Belvide many birds literally went straight through.
Saturday'sweather will be less ideal but Upton has a knack of bucking the trend and sometimes is better the day after the good conditions. I'll be there anyway from early:t:

Flashes :-
Lesser whitethroat.

Moors:-
Little egret 4. GCG. little grebe 6. shoveler 2.
Greenshank 2. redshank. Avocet 1. Common sand. lapwing pr. oystercatcher 4.dunlin 11. through. Common tern 8. Med gull 2x2nd summers.
swift 200. sand martin 120+.
Whitethroat 2. lesser whitethroat. goldcrest singin

In his report from yesterday John omitted that the LRP have hatched one young at the Flashes whilst the Avocets now have five broods.

In total Dave J counted 23 Ringed Plover on or through the reserve yesterday with the largest flock being 13 (whilst a further three were grounded at the Flashes).

The reserve's maximum count of 20 birds was observed arriving at Amy’s Marsh in the early morning of the 15th May. Other significant counts comprise 18 birds on the 31st May 1991, 15 on the 15th May 1998, 14 in 1982 and 13 on the 12th May 1993.

From the Moors Pool this morning Dave J reports:

2 Avocet (from the Flashes), 2 second summer Mediterranean Gull, Yellow Wagtail over

brief visit today on the way back from a trip to the Birder's Store... the better half was very happy with her new optics

Flashes busy with the open day, don't know if it was a coincidence but one of the cushions is now on the floor in front of the hen brook hide - someone might want to retrieve it...

Med gulls were looking very smart on the flashes and was surprised how big the avocet chicks are, but it's been a few weeks since we were over. The LRP chick had a bit of a runaround outside of the cage when we were there. In three hours managed close to 50 species, of which whitethroat and reed warbler are new for our year list.

My belated Birding report from yesterday

Flashes
A cold early start 5.45 am. The wind was in the right direction SE but was circulating around a low pressure rather than coming in from Europe. The migrant waders had all moved out...Common sand & ringed plover so not a good start. The breeding Avocets had another two broods but the one remaining chick in front of the sewage works disappeared early morning..but the parents were less than attentive so no real surprise. The LBBG's have almost disappeared which usually coincides with Avocet hatching. There were 2 LRP chicks and the female was still incubating .
Due to the chill many passerines were hunkered down but lesser and common whitethroat called throughout. Swifts and hirundines fed low above the trees and these were the only visible migrants.
Species count :
Teal pair. gadwall 6. shoveler 5. tufted 20+.Shelduck 6.
Avocet 50 + broods of 3:2:2:2..it looks like there is another
brood on the main 2nd Flash island judging by the adults behaviour. Redshank 3. oystercatcher 2. LRP 5. lapwing 18 (4sitting) again judging by adults behaviour of vigorously attacking magpies and buzzards I thing chicks could be between 2nd &3rd Flash.
BHG 330 pairs minimum. Med Gull 3. LBBG 4. Herring gull 6. Common tern 2.
kestrel. Buzzard. peregrine 2. stock dove 25. raven feeding 1 young on mast and other/s could be in nearby oak trees as the parents were defending there. Jay.
Swift 50+. Skylark 5.
Whitethroat . lesser whitethroat . blackcap 2. chiffchaff 3. sedge warbler 8. Reed 4. Cetti's Warbler.
pied wag. linnet 4. Reed bunting several singing.

Moors : GCG 2. little grebe 6.
shoveler 2. gadwall 6. Tufted 35
lapwing 2. oystercatcher 4.
Common tern 9. Med Gull 2.BHG 35 pairs.
buzzards c10. when sun came out.
kingfisher. great spotted w.
swift 200. sand martin 120. smaller numbers OS swallow and house martin. all the latter 4 species disappeared when sun came out.
Goldcrest along east track. Sedge and reed warblers in good numbers

Hi all

Sounds like a great weekend. Could someone let me know if this is a chiffchaff - due to the fork in the tail?

Thanks.
