My birds and mammals 2011 - big year (1 Viewer)

While I'm not doing any kind of official Big Year, this certainly is a big year for me. I started the year off in Ecuador doing my dissertation research, I attended a 1-week biology course in Belize, joined my husband during his 1-week contract work out in California, have an upcoming trip to Colorado (to run a high altitude marathon, so I'm planning on getting there a week early to acclimate and of course to go birding), and will be attending a scientific meeting in Peru later this year. The biggest trip of all will be my 3.5 weeks in South Africa this summer, my first visit to this continent! There is also the possibility of a short trip to India at the end of the year, but that's not yet certain. And, of course, there is the birding I do in my home state... when I'm here.

So here I am, starting this thread after half the year has already gone by... oh well.

(well, maybe three, isn't bottlenose dolphin now split?)

Bottle-nosed Dolphin have been split to two species but the one you got in Belize is the Common BnD ..... the other one is Indo-Pacific BnD that's only found in ( guess where? ;) ). Brilliant list so far and I'm looking forward to "further instalments" particularly the southern African bits :t:

Chris

Thanks guys, Common Bottlenose Dolphin it is... I also recently noticed that Common Dolphin is split into Short-beaked and Long-beaked, and it looks like I can't determine which species I saw based on range alone (seen on the way back from Santa Cruz Island in Southern California). Is one species more likely than the other in this area?

Unfortunately no, in fact both species will hang out in the same schools. If you know what to look for Long-beaked is easy to pic out though.

I have a couple of photos of the common dolphins, are they identifiable?

I would say the animal in the first picture is a long-beaked, as the rostrum seems a bit long and the facial patterns seems closer to this species.

778. Bell's Vireo

Got him in the scrub adjacent to the local golfcourse this morning. Also had a nice view of a Northern Bobwhite perched in the open and calling, and a male Painted Bunting sitting out in the sun while singing.

Starting my trip out to Colorado, I drove out to eastern Colorado yesterday and camped at John Martin Reservoir, where my main target was Black Rail (success! one came right to my feet!). Today I've birded the high plains and a bit in the mountains. The tally so far: 1 new mammal and 17 new birds:

44. Striped Skunk - nice to a live one for once, seen along the road before dawn while I was still in Arkansas

birds 779-795, lifers in bold:

Scaled Quail
Virginia Rail
Black Rail
Mountain Plover
Upland Sandpiper (along the highway in Oklahoma)
Barn Owl
Red-naped Sapsucker
Say's Phoebe

Congratulations on the Black Rail B :) - a mega that has quite a few on BF muttering into their beards. Having said that, as far as I'm concerned, Mountain Plover don't exist :C :C :C

Chris ;)
