Hi all

Has anyone got any good sites for lesser purple emperor in the Loire? I will be there about the 10th August so I presume it'll be an okay time. Please feel free to PM if you don't feel it's suitable to share details on a public forum.

Regards

Steve

Hi
I do not know the Loire but your timing seems right
The Lesser Purple Emperor is not uncommon in France try warm valleys although I have found them in orchards, on dog droppings, the back of my sweaty jeans roosting and basking on Japanese Knotweed

That backs up my experience too - it's a species that finds you rather than vice versa. No info from the Loire however, Steve, as I've not been there... K

Sorry Adam no info from the Loire but I see them easily on my patch in Russia where they are often flushed from puddles on the trail so scan the ground carefully on approach to any damp spots.

Thanks for info. I will check suitable habitat and look at damp patches and poo. The one Freyer's purple emperor I've seen was coming down to mud at a river. Doing more research, I am worried that I will be between flight times.

On the wing in Russia from first week in July usually, probably quite a bit earlier in the South.
