Nikon Monarch 7 vs Vortex Talon HD (1 Viewer)

I'm trying to decide between the Nikon Monarch 7 and the Vortex Talon HD (both in 10x42). The isn't much of a price difference. Is one better than another? I'm especially interested in low light differences.

Thanks!

I don't think you will a great deal of difference optically between the two. Physically the Nikon is shorter than the Vortex and each has some unique ergonomics. Vortex's warranty and customer service is exemplary. Nikon's warranty is very good as well. Their customer service can be top notch at times and average at others.

I strongly recommend that you order them BOTH and return the "loser". That's why stores like Eagle Optics have 30-day unconditional return policies :)

As Frank notes the ergonomic differences are likely to be greater than the optical differences. Both should be bright, sharp in the center, with a wide field of view and OK edge performance. The Talons are larger and heavier with an open-bridge design, whereas the Monarch is more compact and short bodied with a standard "H body" design.

So which is "better" will likely be much more about which FITS YOU better, than any absolute measure.

You might want to email the guys at www.opticsreviewer.com. They have detailed reviews posted of both the Monarch 7 and the Talon HD. I have corresponded with them before via email and they are very nice and forthcoming with info and recommendations.

Here is the Monarch 7 review.
Here is the Talon HD review.

I think you'll find the Field of view of the Monarch 7 to really stand out in the field. I just got back from a trip in Honduras and the 7s performed extremely well in dark, tropical rain forests. Please let me know if you have any questions!

All the best,
