Wow. Any idea where?[/QUOTE
Reply from Vic]

"As you drive up the mountain there is a sharp right hand turn into the carpark just before the road stops. It was on the rocks about 5 meters up right at the turn on the northern side of the mountain."

The first snows fell on the mountains of Lesvos over the past few days, unfortunately it didn't bring with it any rare bird reports. Merry Christmas all.

White-Headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala 26/12/17

Smashing boxing day find.
Eleni Galinou , of Lesvos Bird News, found a White-Headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala) at the mouth of the Tsknias River on boxing day 26/12/17.
As far as I can tell, the only previous record on Lesvos, was of a bird shot in Dec 1991.
Also found was a red-breasted merganser (Mergus serrator)
Photos by kind permission of Eleni Galinou.

The HELLENIC RARITIES COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT 2016 has been published.
This includes some Lesvos Records, click here if you are interested.

Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) 29/12/17

Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) 29/12/17 Skala Kalloni (fields)
A great find to end a year of Birding on Lesvos.
Local widlife enthusiast , Giorgis Laskaridis, has photographed a Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) on 29th December 2017.
at fields near Skala Kalloni .
This rare sighting for Lesvos, was first reported on Lesvos Bird News, early this morning.
A very Happy New Year to anyone who has taken the time to view this thread in 2017.
Lesvos remains a top European destination for both birding and enjoying as a holiday destination.
If you are thinking of going, take the plunge and book now for 2018.
It is a safe friendly island, easily navigated with the indispensable assistance of Steve Dudley's , A Birdwatching Guide to Lesvos , still available from Amazon books, here.
For broader interests, such as : botany, insects, reptiles , birds, walks and tours I would also recommend the Crossbill Guide to Lesvos
which is a more recent publication, also available from Amazon here.

03 Nov 2017 Kalloni Hawfinch

A late 2017 entry.
The Hawfinch below was unfortunately the victim of a window collision.
Aspasia Koulmandas who photographed the bird believes that it soon recovered.
Not often seen on Lesvos , though they are thought to winter theren in small flocks. I thought it worth a post.
