With reference to the Med Gulls, the evening of Sunday 18th June had 3 Adults (the breeding pair and Billy no mates) at the Flashes and a pair of second summer also. The second summer birds were displaying/pair bonding and I wondered if they were the Moors birds or a new pair?

ChrisB :)

Interesting. The Moors birds could not be seen on Wednesday. The vegetation is now very thick, but I would have expected to see some activity given that there are two young to feed. I wouldn't have thought that both parents would leave the young birds and fly to the Flashes.

Des.

Good news from Andy P at the Moors Pool with a family of 3 young GC Grebes.

Also the first returning Common Sand as per Sue Hyde.

JTB reports from the reserve yesterday evening:

MOORS POOL
1 GC Grebe young, 3 Little Grebe young, 2 Common Tern young (1:1), eclipse drake Red-crested Pochard, Common Sandpiper, 140 Swift, no sign of any Med Gulls, Red Kite at 3pm as per Tim Rowlands

FLASHES
4 LR Plover, 14 Curlew, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Oystercatcher, 3 Med Gulls +chick, 41 adult Avocet and 13 broods of 24 young (new broods of 1:3), 2 Shelduck, 2 female Shoveler (no sign of any young), 2 Greylag with small gosling in sewage meadow (different pair to Sailing Pool - first time two pairs have bred on the reserve)

No Lapwing observed across the reserve!

This week's Red-crested Pochard is the eighth record for the reserve which has involved a total of ten birds. Recent birds have only stayed for single or a few days but the first two sightings remained for seven days and ten days (split over two periods) respectively.

Pics from last night

Hi

I also saw the red crested pochard last night - thanks guys for letting me know. And my first green sandpiper. A great couple of hours.

In what is a traditionally quiet time of year, June's list has crawled to 71 species at the month's midpoint. Potential additions for the remainder of June include:

Little Egret
,

Little egret made a brief appearance this morning, got mobbed by BHG's and sulked off North end of moors, sat there couple of minutes and then slipped away unnoticed. :flyaway:

Moors
Red-crested Pochard showing well this evening, snoozing close inshore on the west side. A single 2s Med Gull perched briefly on the rails in front of the concrete hide- compared to the birds seen later, this was probably a 3rd bird to the resident pair on primary pattern.
Sadly no activity around the nest and no sign of the chicks. Seems stranger considering how advanced they were. Hopefully the heat last week didn't get them?
No sign of any GCG or L.Grebe chicks. 2 Kingfisher active at the south end of the pool. 2 Shelduck dropped in briefly. 1 Lapwing and 4(+at least 1) Oystercatchers. 1 Cormorant.

Sailing Pool
1 Egyptian and 2 Greylag Goose

Flashes
4 Med Gulls (2ad +2 2s) + the chick developing well. Blackwit feeding with the Avocets at the back of the flashes, 2 Green Sandpipers 2 drake Teal, 3 Shoveler and 6 LRP (1 grown juv). 1 Curlew flew north. 3 Lapwing
