This paper suggests that Bar-winged Cinclodes should be split into southern, central and northern species (perhaps as previously suggested by Jaramillo 2003: Birds of Chile).

My guess is that this would result in something like:

  • C fuscus (monotypic) - [Jaramillo's 'Buff-winged Cinclodes']
  • C albiventris (incl 'longipennis', 'rivularis', tucumanus, rufus, yzurietae, riojanus) - [Jaramillo's 'Cream-winged Cinclodes']
  • C albidiventris (incl oreobates, 'paramo', heterurus)
Perhaps someone with access could clarify...

Richard

PS: Remsen 2003 (HBW8) treats longipennis as a synonym of albiventris, but it is actually senior (1838 cf 1861), and perhaps should have priority?

Do you have a quick range summary?

Roughly from the map :

heterurus : SW Venezuela
oreobates : W Colombia
aldibiventris : SW Colombia, C Ecuador, NW Peru
albiventris : W Peru, SW Bolivia, NW Argentina
fuscus : NC Chile, W & S Argentina
tucumanus, rufus, yzurietae, riojanus : NW Argentina

Yes, that's exactly right

But Paramo Cinclodes has been used as english name for Cinclodes excelsior
Oops, missed that - I'm still a beginner when it comes to the Neotropics! Perhaps 'Short-billed Paramo Cinclodes' or 'Paramo Bar-winged Cinclodes' - only joking.

mb1848, with your evident interest in the historical record, can you shed any light on my earlier comment (post #1, PS) re the priority of albiventris (Philippi & Landbeck, 1861) vs longipennis (Swainson, 1838)?

Camilo Sanín has now submitted Proposals #414/415 to AOU-SACC to change the linear sequence of species in Cinclodes and to split Cinclodes fuscus into three species (English names are not suggested):
http://www.museum.lsu.edu/~Remsen/SACCprop414.html
http://www.museum.lsu.edu/~Remsen/SACCprop415.html

I still wonder about the use of albiventris vs longipennis...

Concerning the seniority of Peruvian longipennis to both albiventris and albidiventris, Van Remsen and Camilo Sanín have explained that due to confusion regarding the type locality and in the absence of a type specimen, it is uncertain whether longipennis represents the central or the northern species.
