Small yellow/black bird in the city (2 Viewers)

This morning as I was going out, I saw a small bird. Yellow/Black feathered, very tiny, looks like a finch/canary/sparrow kinda bird. Top is black, bottom/belly is bright yellow. It was on the bumper of another car and when he backed up the bird fell, and jumped under my jeep. I couldn't leave it there, I crawled under there with my suit, and after a bit of chasing I grabbed the bugger. It is very tiny. Felt like bird was blind because didn't do anything unless he felt my hand, however moved his head as he was tracing things around him when I turned the corner. Also I watched the pupil it kept enlarging and contracting against the sun.

I went back upstairs, told my wife to give me a box. So now the bird is at home in a tiny box with tiny pieces of bread.

I was worried about some sort of disease, so I washed and wiped my hands with lemon/alcohol afterwards. The bird was too clean and active to be sick, it just couldn't fly. It could be a baby..

it is definitely not a sparrow (http://identify.whatbird.com/img/4/3035/image.aspx) not like this one, sparrow has short beak.
This one has a long pointy beak..

It is not a finch either, they also got similar beak (http://www.birdingmaine.com/images/gold_finch_closeup2.jpg)...

it is similar to this: http://www.haryana-online.com/images/Birds/Szabolcs/Grey-headed Canary.jpg

sorry no pictures yet.
what can I do, and any ideas what kind of bird? I cannot let him get away outside or a cat will grab him or will get run over by a car.
I am located in NYC.

The description of your bird sounds like some type of warbler, perhaps a Magnolia Warbler or Nashville Warbler? See http://sdakotabirds.com/species_photos/magnolia_warbler_2.htm

My guess is that the bird hit a window and is injured/disoriented. If he starts moving around or starts getting active, take him to a park or something and let him go and see what he does. Otherwise, take him to a vet or wildlife rehabber. Thanks for rescuing him! Keep us posted.

I hope that's the case. I will be home shortly, and will see what's the situation. My wife told me that the bird was more active after some time I left. I will be out of the city tonight, so I can probably let him go over there.

I wonder what a warbler is doing in my area. What can I feed him during this period?

Thanks.

Warblers are migrating through right now, and fly at night. They often hit windows - yours appears lucky enough to just have been stunned. They are bug eaters, but I'm guessing you don't have any caterpillars around the house to feed it. Since it's improving, it will probably be happy enough to be released and find its own food.

Thanks Neil.

Hello,
A few friends suggested that I should keep him.. I could never keep him, I have no right to. I had birds half of my life, and I realized I was just keeping them hostage or in prison. Yes we fed them and took care of them, but that's just not right. :( Twilight Zone, anyone? That episode.. "Human" in an alien zoo.

He got much better and I let him go, from 7th floor apartment out and he flew away. I felt good and bad at the same time. I felt great that I saved his life, or at least saved him today.

Here are the pictures I got when I went back home and got him out of the box. He was chirping :) Funny little birdy. I will miss you.

So, anyone ID'ed him?

**EDIT: I guess we cannot post pictures directly. Please click on them, imageshack is slow but they will load.

You most likely did save his life. Common Yellowthroats are beautiful birds. And the fact that you took the time to actively rescue him says a lot about you.

Well done!

Hello,

Well you did the right thing - what your friends suggested was illegal anyway, Common Yellowthroats are protected by the Migratory Bird Act. They are gorgeous, aren't they?

I just wanted to give you a Kudos for taking him in and then also not listening to your friends and releasing him.
Job well done!
