Interesting Malaysian Moth
Wish I had a digital shot. Anyway, this past summer up at Frasier's Hill on the Malay Peninsula I found a cream coloured moth perhaps 3 inches across and 1 inch long. On each wing it had an almost perfect representation of what really looked like a fly with an iredescent body. Legs and all. I've seen "Eyes" in moth wings, but these really looked like flies. I do have a few slides of the creature but haven't transferred them for viewing on a computer. I'm by no means a Bug Man but always notice things when in tropical places. I showed the moth to my wife and others and their first thought was the same...............flies. Any thoughts? Chris

Hi Chris,
This is Macrocilix maia (Leech, 1888) Drepanidae, Drepaninae source: Holloway, J.D., 1998. The Moths of Borneo: Families Castniidae, Callidulidae , Drepanidae and Uraniidae. Malayan Nature Journal 52: 1-155 cheers, Roger.

Thanks Roger. Sorry the photo isn't as nice as the slide. I showed the slide one night to a large group of people and all thought it looked like "Flies" on the wings. Interesting that you found it in the Borneo book. Nothing like Ice Ages to spread things around. Haven't spent much time at the same elevation in Sabah -- just one day at 1500 meters. The bugs and things in the Danum Valley (where we go) are a sight to behold. Thanks again...........Chris
