I'm new here, except for lurking for a couple of months. I've been a stargazer for a long time, using big upside down image telescopes and Porro prism binoculars. But I increasingly enjoy birdwatching and general daytime observing. When I got tired of lugging my individual focus 7x50 Fujinon FMT around all day (honest, I really did this), being surprised by birds at the wrong distance, I relied on these forums to help me chose something appropriate. Consider my difficult position. The Fujinon had spoiled me with its excellent optics. Scrambling through the rocky terrain around here requires a bino that you can stand to hear knock occasionally. I'm not wealthy, and wasn't ready to zoom straight to the top without making sure this roof thing was going to work out. So, I landed on a perfect used 8x42 Trinovid BA for $800. Practically everything said here about it was right, and I feel like it was a good choice. The roof thing is definitely working out!

I feel lucky to know about this place, where the best binos of this type are used, enjoyed for what they are, and criticized hard but fairly.

Ron,
Sounds like you made a pretty good choice and a good deal. Looking forward to hearing how you like them.

Good for you Ron.
You can't go wrong with Trinovids. I've had three and all were/are great instruments. Money well spent for sure.
