Nutmeg Mannikins in Texas

I have a family of Nutmeg Mannikins that have moved into my back yard near Houston, TX. They are fun little birds and I have been photographing them everyday for a while now.

Well, these birds are not even supposed to be in the western hemisphere. Evidently there is a group of them in California and in Florida. Now they are in southeast Texas.

(There was some discussion about their distribution in the Caribbean in this id thread.)

I think they are very handsome birds - would love to have a chance to watch them in the garden.

They're a firmly established introduced species here in Cairns too. I quite like them, but they may be responsible for displacing the native finches from the area...

I've only seen them in PetsMart. Nice looking birds. But I'm wondering how they will affect native birds as well.

They're Estrildid Finches (AKA Mannikins, Munias, Waxbills), which as a family are confined to Africa, Southern Asia and Australasia. This particular species is from South-East Asia.

Alright, I get it. They are originally from over there but some idiot (as with house sparrows), brought them over here and they made feral populations.
Is THAT right?
