Well said Derek
I was working in Fleetwood today so nipped to the Marine/Boating lakes hoping to see the kingfisher that's been photographed there recently, there was no sign of it, although a chap who walks around there everyday says he has been seeing a Kingfisher regularly for the last 3 weeks. What I did see was (well to me anyway) quite remarkable, there were no fewer than 12 Red breasted Mergansers, with at least 4 males & 8 females, I think there could've been more but they wouldn't stay still & above water long enough for me to get an accurate count in the short time I had available. I've attached a few dodgy handheld record shots including one showing 8 females/2 males in frame, I have another photo showing 4 males but it's pretty poor so won't bother posting it. Hopefully, if the weathers half decent, I'll nip back tomorrow with a bigger lens & tripod for some better shots. In addition to the RB Mergansers were the usual 50+ Turnstones, half a dozen Redshank, 2 (male)Goldeneye & a Little Grebe. Oh & yesterday, at Back Lane Hambleton/Out Rawcliffe were a flock of about 20 Redwing. Cheers Cliff

Nice shots Cliff and a good sighting of Red Breasted Mergansers. I managed to see 1 female and 4 males last weekend behind the Dome at Morecambe.

I don't think anyone thinks you're out of order, I certainly don't, but I think it would be easy for this birding thread to get dragged off topic with posts about photography. Being primarily for sharing sightings it's probably not the right place for such discussions. Fair enough Neil posed the question about image resizing, but I think Derek resolved that in the very next post? As a photographer myself I could readily contribute about photography & processing techniques, but avoid doing so on here as there are other places on the 'net for such discussions & maybe the birders looking in don't want to have to sift through such posts to get to the sightings. I even feel guilty posting my photos - which I have to admit is a tad of self indulgence on my part. Anyhow, fingers crossed for some dry weather this weekend so we can all get off the computer & out birding Regards Cliff ** a quick edit - Robert, whilst on the subject of photography I've just been having a look at your gallery on here, you've got some cracking photos there, that Yellow Wagtail is a beauty

I took a photo of the kingfisher at Fleetwood. That was on the 8th so it's good to know that it's still about. I'll have a look on Sunday for it and the RBMs.

I nipped back to Fleetwood Marine/Boating lakes for an hour or two in the gloom this morning.
No sooner had I arrived than a Kingfisher flew by, with no time to change camera settings I grabbed a quick photo, and later got a prolonged sighting of it (assuming it was the same one) perched on the island, alas too far away for my kit. Other sightings included 7 Goldeneye (3 males & 4 females), 3 RB Mergansers (1 male & 2 females), 2 Little Grebe, 20+ Redshank & 30+ Turnstone. given the poor light all I managed were a few poor record shots, which are attached. Cliff

Cheers Cliff.
I like the gargling Goldeneye!! At Martin Mere today for the "Birdfair" and enjoyed looking around. As for out and about the place was chocker so just stayed in Swan Link. Just the usual birds but we did have a Perry fly over after scaring all the lapwings to death. Oh 6 Ruff where the only waders there and one was a very white morph. Watched the starlings coming in as well but not really very spectacular, they did not build up into a very big group and perfom, just stayed in small ones and dived into the trees. |

Quite a productive day today. Up at 7:30am, out on Marton Mere by 8:15. Was DEAD and that is an understatement... lasted till 9:45am and sightings were slim, Teal, Widgeon, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Shoveler, 1 Great Crested Grebe, Reed Bunting... must of been the weather.
Then back to the car to head over to Fairhaven and Granny's Bay, the lake showed the Shag, 3 Red Breasted Mergansers (1 male, 2 female) and 1 male Goldeneye which was nice. The bay had usual suspects of Redshanks, Curlew and Oystercatchers. Then up Newton Marsh, which was just Shoveler, Widgeon and Teal. Home, Brew, Xbox and now time to learn about RAW conversions.

First thing that you'll lean about RAW conversions is that they'll take ages if you do a few at one go. :(

Hi, hoping to pay a visit to Leighton Moss first thing on Wed morning-does anyone know if the paths to the hides are still flooded-know they were last week just wondered if the level had dropped at all as the rain doesnt appear to have been as horrendous over the weekend?
