I have the D2x,D3,D3s and D7000. The D3s is better for fast action than the others, but not in 3D mode. Select 21 or 51 focus points and Continuous Mode with Release + Focus. If you want to photograph Greenshanks or ducks in flight the D7000 just won't cut it. On a wagtail or swallow just forget it. If light isn't a problem and you don't need the video then the D3 is the best camera out of the box I've ever bought. Up to iso 1600 with little/no noise and blindingly fast AF with the right lens. I would recommend a D3 refurb. I carry the D7000 for slower action and subjects further away.
I'm waiting for the D4 though which should be out later this year.

Neil, thanks for your advice. I could have had a D3 for £1800 a few months ago but passed. I will now also wait for the the next Nikon iteration D4/D400/D800 and see then. Meanwhile my main subjects are static birds so I'm happy to wait.
