humming bird mix question
I was wondering what humming bird mix everyone uses?? and which works best, I remember my mom's hummingbird mix of 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to 3 to 4 tablespoons of raspberry powder juice (can't remember what brand but my mom said anyone would work??), has anyone tried this mixture?? I remember when I was small our house was buzzing with hummingbirds almost like a bee nest, people would always ask my mom for her mixture but she didn't share it, but I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this mixture and if it worked for them???

4 parts water and 1 part sugar. Nothing else! My house is buzzing like a bee's nest, too.

The migration map on hummingbirds.net does not have names on the Canadian part, but you can look. There are other migration maps for Canada.

I use 4 parts tap water to 1 part table sugar (cane). No dyes of any kind as they may harm hummingbirds. Most if not all hummingbird experts will tell you 4:1 ratio and no dyes. Nature's nectar is clear not red. If you feel you need to add red to your clear feeder, tie on a red bow and take it down once the hummers have discovered the feeder. Perky Pets and its parent company have tricked generations into believing red dye is crucial to attracting hummingbirds - not so!
Sorry for the rant. I'll get off my soap box now. |

Perhaps, since you are living in a place with a French name, you will get them visiting from Quebec where the RUby Throat hummingbirds do visit, I have read and see here: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/maps/h...pring2011.html
More Hummy lore here: http://www.network54.com/Forum/439743/ and you will love the pics our southern neighbours post! I hope you do get some. I saw feeders in place around the Great Lakes, N. side, when I drove thru in '88. Are there any feeders up in your neck of the woods? |
