Hi

Can anyone tell me how to reduce the height of the sound frequency on a sonagram.
I use Audacity to cut out the white noise backgound as well as the length of the recording ect before opening up the file in Raven Lite 1 to make the sonagram.

I can make the sonagram no problem it's just reducing the frequency that I have a problem with! For example I have this recording of a redstart which reaches a pitch of 8KHz but my graph is telling me the height of the actual sonagram is 20KHz. I want to reduce this to ten, thus giving me a better and easier sonagram to read.

I can not help you with Raven Lite as I gave up on it long ago however if you use Audacity as the sonogram generator, you can set the vertical scale frequency range to what suits you in the "Preferences" menu under "Edit".. You can also use <control-P> to get there and then look for "Spectrograms" as a menu item... Click on "Spectrograms" and a box will open that will allow you to set the frequency scaling...

You need to select the area you'd like to see. Select in the sonogram portion of the window, both width and height. Then click the button which says zoom to selection. You can then copy or export the image.

Opening an older version of Rave Lite, I see magnifying glass buttons controlling the vert/horiz zoom. The buttons circled in red control the freq zoom:

For birds i always use the open source program Wavesurfer. In my experiance this is the best open source program for sonogram analyzing and making!

I'd never heard of that one. Only 6MB, and no install necessary.

Have you tried Sonic Visualiser? It's about 22MB and also needs no installation. It seems to support annotation of the spectrogram, and also exporting to a graphics file, which saves doing screen dumps.
