Mediterranean Cruise Birding?

Hi

I will most likely be going on a cruise around the Mediterranean Sea during a week in September travelling from Spain to Malta and Italy.

Is there any suggestions as to what I can look out for while on the cruise ship? Any specific sea birds that I should watch for?

Hello
The most obvious answer to that is anything you see! IN the course of the last 3 excursions we have done from the port of Tarragona in April, May and June the list of species is as such: Storm Petrel, Pom, Arctic and Great Skua, Balearic, Yelkouan, Cory's and Sooty Shearwater (very scarce), Gannet and the usual terns and gulls. Also had a Fin Whale and "Moon fish" (dirrect translation, don't know if it's called that in English).

Best
Steve

Hi solarrobor,

Good to know you will be visiting Malta on a cruise holiday

Regarding your question of what birds you can see from the cruise: Well practicaly you can encounter anything. By September plenty of autumn migrants will already on the move and plenty of seabirds will be wondering around the Mediterraean sea. Since I'm a Maltese birder, I can only provide you info about Maltese birds you can see.

When you start to approch Malta to berth in our Grand Harbour, keep a watchful eye as you can easily encounter some interesting birds along the coast: Herons migrating over head - Grey, Night and Little egret, Cory's Shearwater, Yelkouan Shearwater, Yellow Legged Gull, Audouin's Gull, Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Cormorant, Sandwich Tern, Caspian Tern and more. Practically anything can be seen from the sea, especially at that time. Its really a matter of luck of what passes by. If you will be visiting after mid-September, possibly even raptors as it will be peak period for them.

Small tip: Also when you are about to enter the Grand harbour, you will pass by a large breakwater. This is a favorite place for resting gulls. So make sure you give it a look on the way in.

Cheers
