Iquitos, Peru - Birding
Hi
I'm going to Iquitos on Thursday and will be on a working on a boat on the Amazon for 2 and a half weeks. Obviously I'll see alot over this time but I wont have the freedom to be birding as and when I want. Can anyone tell me if there is much birding to be done in and around Iquitos (on a budget, so no ecolodges etc) or if it is purely an access point into the amazon. Many Thanks Dave |

There's fantastic birding around Iquitos, the Allpahuayo-Mishana reserve - home to several species of birds that were only described to science in the last 15 years or so - is only about 25 km from the centre of Iquitos on a good paved road. You can arrange for a motorized rickshaw to take you there early in the AM, then hitch a ride back to town.
