Some of the birds that day were: Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Mourning Warblers, Black-and-white Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Least Flycatcher, Northern Cardinal, Gray Catbird, Ovenbird and some Empidonax species.

It is a day I will never forget! I just do not remember the very first bird I put a band on.
I would remember that day if it were to happen on Cape Clear! October 12th 2011 would be good.....

Woodchat Shrike is the first bird that I put a ring on its leg at Smir marshes, north Morrocco with a British ringer called Ian Thompson and Mohamed (April 2005), It is a day I will never forget it, I can still remember when the bird bite my finger.

First bird for me was Raven at Trefil Quarries back in the mid 90's - I remember the abseil with my ringing partner clearly to get to the nest as well as the backbreaking prussik ascent since the cliff face was way higher than the length of our ropes.

I still have a copy of the BTO card somewhere in my birding files as a reminder.

What bird is this ring from?

Not sure which forum to post this? Someone at work found what we think is a ring from a pigeon. He found a claw on the ground and on it was a ring with the following details:
the number 171465
R5R or R3R 86
This seems to be aluminium.

Would this be from a pigeon?

UK Racing rings normally have the prefix NPA, NEHU, NWHU, SU, WHU or GB, to identify which federation the owner was a member of (there are others but none feature a single R) so probably not but a picture of the leg & ring if possible may help to identify the bird or determine the rings origin.

Thanks for that. I'll try to get a pic of the ring.

The first bird I banded was a Wood Duck in the Sacramento Valley, CA in Summer 2007. We were banding nesting hens in the box, so I got to see a few hatches of baby wood ducklings all wet and tired from the hatch!
Since then I have worked for three years now banding waterfowl in the Sacramento Valley. I have banded Mallard, Wood Duck, Northern Pintail, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Cinnamon Teal (my favorite!), Hooded Merganser, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, and American Green-winged Teal, and have trapped Double-crested Cormorant, Pied-billed Grebe, American Coots, and Common Moorhen (and one very upset beaver) that were released without banding.
I am hoping that my next job will involve mist-netting and working with the perching birds more, I have little experience with the smaller birds!

The first birds I ringed were hand reared mallard with WAGBI rings. However it fostered an interest that lead to me ringing true wild waterfowl starting with a wigeon and ended with about 12,000 wildfowl ( mainly tufted duck , wigeon , teal , pochard and gadwall ) of 28 species plus a whole host of other species of waders , raptors and passerines.
