peregrine Ringing + Advice

In my local patch we have some Peregrine falcons nesting they have been here for some 5>6 years and successfully reared chicks and all have fledged, last year 4 fledged. I have emailed local ringers, BTO etc to see if we can get the chicks recorded and rung, but i have had no successes, in fact i have only received one email back in 3 years. The other day i was at the site viewing these birds and i noticed a couple of the work force at this building messing with the chicks and disturbing the site somewhat.. I have checked this morning and chicks are still there and so are the adult birds.. I'm sure the workers at this site mean no harm but i need them to be educated to what could become a tragic outcome... The local person I know where i live who has some authority is Judith Smith but i cant get hold of her.. Anyone have any help for me or what course of action i should take... Thanks for any help Steve

I'd advise you to 'phone the BTO and ask to speak with someone in the ringing office. E-mails are all very well, but when one has a full Inbox it is easy to overlook those which are not a glaring priority.

Steve, the chicks from this pair have been ringed under licence for the past few years now and it seems likely that this what you may have witnessed. If the chicks weren't actually ringed there and then they may have been checking the chicks for imminent ringing. Those involved with the ringing have to comply with strict health and safety requirements due to access to the box as I'm sure you can imagine and so are likely to look like workers.

Judith Smith is involved with the Manchester raptor group and remains your first port of call, please contact me privately if you need an email address for her.

If anyone sees any disturbance at the nest site of a Schedule 1 bird then the police should be informed as soon as possible.
