Disregard my last post about image lacking at distant objects! Collimation is off so not a fair summation of the binocular at hand! Bryce...

Well received the second binocular. It's really quite amazing, if i wasn't such an optics snob i could see using these all the time! Optics have come along ways! The veiw for less than $150 bucks is quite good! But, i know it's gonna cost to get the same veiw as my other binoculars at a higher magnification!!! I must admit that though the Swarovski and Vortex offerings at 15x are probably great, i'm leaning towards a porro after using the Oberwerks! The 3d veiws at 15x are downright addictive it put's the whole seen into a whole different perspective! Also i have put my order on hold for the Ultra's, center focus is a must! I guess the Docter's are my only hope? For current production that is for a center focus 15x porro! Bryce...

Sounds more encouraging. I've been intrigued by those two Oberwerks (or the alternative branded cousins). I really need to find out if I can hand hold a 15x. I'm fine with a heavy 12x, but they are probably a step too far. Sure you don't want to see what you get for double the money?

If you're thinking about hand-holding a 15x binocular, then give serious consideration to the Docter 15x60 which is MUCH easier to hand-hold than any 15x70 I've seen. It's all a matter of balance.

A request. First, by way of explanation (and hoping someone can respond despite my quirks): I don't like looking through a scope at all. Quirk 2: Obsessed with lightness and smallnes in bins.
Thinking of replacing a Nikon EX 16x50 with a Zeiss Conquest 15x45, much lighter and smaller (6x the price, though), as my main long-distance glass for observing birds. No-one has commented on the latter model so far in this thread. Would you know of anything negative about it? Have read a handful of reviews, all I can find on the internet. Thanks! PS. Am aware of the data the attached chart shows. Also that the Vortex Viper is possibly better optically. Last edited by pompadour : Sunday 2nd September 2012 at 17:23. Reason: Mostly, added PS and chart. |

I wasn't at all impressed with the zeiss 15x45 conquests. The overall image was dull! Always felt the need to continually fiddle with the focus to achieve any kind of sharpness which for the most part was lacking! Alot of money and the Zeiss name is it very dissapointing!!! Recently got to try the 15x56 Vortex, much better in my opinion than thr Zeiss!!! And from what i have read is close to the Swarovski 15x56 slc's??? Wasn't going to replace a good scope like i thought!? So went back to a scope, Swaro 65 hd!!! Image is bright and sharp! Acctually better at 60x than the Nikon 60 ed i recently had! So the extra 5mm of aperature is noticable at 60x!!! Bryce...

Bryce, thanks. What you say about the Z. is pretty useful to me (it is more negative than what is said in the few reviews I found). What you have experienced and read about the Vortex (Kaibab) 15x56 matches what I read. The Vortex (Viper) 15x50, also, though not that good, is said to be better than this Zeiss.
However - ! The V. 15x56 is twice the weight, and also a little pricier, than the Z. As for the V. 15x50 (28.4 in ounces), the price is < 60% of the Z., but several users say it cannot be hand-held, vs the Z. (21.9 oz.) which users make it a point to say can be. I fancy my hands are fairly steady, so I might go for the V. 15x50. What you say about the scopes might also be useful if I reform! Thought you might have mentioned the 60-65 difference with ref to that other thread on "wasted" light. Adding in edit: Then again, the image in the Z. will be steadier. And it's light and small! You see the porblem with obsessives! I would like someone to please tell me: Will the image of this Z. handheld always show more detail in good light than the best 10xs? Unless I learn of something very negative about it that might be the final criterion! Last edited by pompadour : Monday 3rd September 2012 at 07:58. Reason: Minor addition, change in paragraph 2, and as above. |
