Sorry JT.... I had not noticed this thread with this programme - was on holiday when your added this to this area of the Forum so it was overlooked by myself.

Not sure which thread to put this in, but I really enjoyed this programme. Good to see Packham getting to present something with a larger scale.

Sadly I missed half of the programme but it is good to see Chris in a programme environment that suits him.

Hi everyone

I feel that the programme content should go on this thread as JT did produce this thread long before I added mine - it was my bad judgement.

I did not see the programme tonight as I had other distractions - but from what I have read it was a well received programme.

Will look at it on BBC I-player asap.

Regards
Kathy

The one problem I had was that a few of the facts I know, were wrong (e.g. British day record is well over the 143 he stated) and that calls into question the ones I don't know.

I really enjoyed the programme and Chris is 95% there as a presenter. He needs to check his researchers' facts and sound a little less glib sometimes and he could be on the way to the top. It was noticeable that his delivery became more Attenborough like, almost to the point of caricature.

I too thought he sounded quite Attenborough-like at times. I remember one line: "here, in the rainforest", and thinking it was a deliberate nod to the Guvnor! His enthusiasm was quite infectious, and he almost had (dare I say it) a touch of gravitas!

But one thing he constantly does that is very annoying is a deliberate/unwitting patronisation, when he says things such as "we call it x" or "we know it as y", as if he is part of the "we" and the viewer is part of the "you" and isn't expected to know what photosynthesis is. He does it a lot on Springwatch, and also on this new show. Maybe he measn it as 'the Royal we', but it does sound as if he fancies himself as an intellectual and considers his viewers to be a few notches below that.

Tonight's Grasslands episode was practically faultless. Very enjoyable, corking film of animals rarely put on TV and Chris on top form.

I was disappointed that it wasn't on the HD channel tonight, so I'll need to catch-up during the week. I also looked on Amazon and it's coming out on DVD, but not on Blu-Ray. Disappointed with this too - if a series is on the HD channel then it really sure come out on Blu-Ray.

Sorry for the rant, but a good programme like this deserves better treatment.

Just catching up with this series and enjoying it very much. At least it has a presenter who knows what he is talking about! More please BBC.

Yes, so far pretty good, nice to see something on telly about ecology. But I was a bit less impressed with the one about N American deciduous forest: too much about "scientists" trapping animals - what's that got to do with it ?

A bit frustrating that the tennis overrun meant last night's episode was scrapped or more so because there was no information put out at the time. I ended up sitting through a tennis match that I did not want to watch only to hear the statement 'we are unable to bring you Secrets of the Living Planet...'. No information about when the programme will be shown with the only other reference being Sue Barker saying that the programme would follow the conclusion of the match timed at 8:10. Overruns are not new so it was a bit disappointing of the BBC not to put out any information while it was happening.

A theme of the whole series has been the process of the science, not only stating "this is a fact", but explaining how that conclusion has been reached. The trapping was part of the "science" as was the bloke taking tree cores.

I switched over to the BBC HD channel just before 8 only for some Coast shorts to be shown. When I looked at the website, they kept putting the start time of Secrets of our Living Planet back by 5, then 10 minutes, so I hoped it would get an airing. Eventually a comedy programme started around 8.20 and that's when I realised it wasn't happening. All it would have taken was a quick announcement on air or on their website.

This is not the first time this programme has been shunted from BBC HD, although the first time it happened it still aired on BBC2 at the scheduled time - but I always choose the HD version these days.

Not only did it not air, there was no announcement to tell us when it will be shown. I always feel it is churlish to complain about the BBC when they are the only channels giving us quality wildlife programmes but this was a poor performance.

Programme 4 shown tonight on BBC2 but not listed in most TV guides, I only found out about it when I checked the EPG listings. A very good programme, which should now be available on the i-player.

The HD version was on last week a couple days after it was scheduled and has been on iPlayer since then. Agreed, very good programme.
