Field Guide for Canada / Hudson Bay

Off to Hudson Bay in a couple of weeks - first time birding in North America. Any suggestions for a small bird guide so I can make sense of what I see? (Up to now, my birding has been limited to the UK.)

Thanks for any ideas!

The Sibley Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern North America is small and arguably the best field guide to the area.

That would be my choice too, although it's rather hefty as field guides go. The National Geographic guide is also good, and a fair bit smaller.

Well, the 'big Sibley' is rather hefty, but the Eastern derivative (which includes Hudson Bay) recommended by Edward is smaller and lighter than NatGeo.

Ah, sorry, misread Edward's answer...I was thinking of the 'big Sibley'.

I only have the "big" Sibley and the plates are a bit small. How about the Peterson Guide to birds east of the Rockies? Loads of cheap copies of that knocking about and it is pocket sized and light.

You can see inside the 'Eastern Sibley' here -

I'd also recommend the audio cd set here (there may be alternatives out there produced since?) -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stokes-Field...2476783&sr=1-3

Download to mobile phone/iphone or whatever.

(edit- I guess technology means there may well be an app for fieldguides/ bird songs out there already?? ... meaning that buying some cds to convert is a bit pointless, lol ??)
