Hummingbird Macro?
Anyone ever have any luck with hummingbird macro? The best I can do is setup with a remote trigger close to a feeder. Wondering if anyone has any luck when locating a nest without disturbing the occupants

Havnt tried to get on a nest. Do like to shoot them on feeders, flowers. Favorite is when they're bugging (foraging insects) Almost demands hand held.
Heres un-official tabulation of focal length, lens extension, shooting distance 100mm macro lens, 13mm extension, 2.2 meters distant 200mm , 27mm extension, 3 meters distant 300mm , 50(+)mm extension, 3-4 meters distant 400mm , 100mm extension, 4-5 meters distant Extension and shooting distance is a bit variable, different lens construction/manufacter offer different pespective of performnce criteria per focal length. Will get you in the ballpark with frame filling detail though. Have to experiment a bit and decide on portrait/landscape compostion. Tethered whether by wire or wireless does have advantage of being less intrusive, disadvantage is in loss of some shooting varibles regarding control. Odds are, flash is going to be required. Quick changing enviromental factors combined with flash demands dynamic control situation. Edit: For clarification, True macro defined means subject is life size on sensor or film plane. To squeeze a hummer into frame would require a minimum of 6cm square (2, 1/4 inch square) format. Trying to do currently on film. Whats mentioned offers better magnification, while maintaining lens ability to resolve. Realistically around minimum 5:1 ratio (format plane(s) to subject) relative 35mm format of 36mm x 24mm. End edit Pic is uncropped through an old 400mm achromat was playing with last year. with 100mm extension from around 12 feet (4 meters). Apeture was F/6.3. Did clone out goofey looking plastic flower petal on feeder. Last edited by Bird_Bill : Friday 18th May 2012 at 20:29. |
