September pelagic
Good morning!
Could anyone advise one day pelagic trip for sooty, balearic shearwaters and stormpetrels early September? Any suggestions for roseate terns in July? Tkanks: Attila from Hungary |

If you are asking about Britain then you don't really need to go out on a pelagic for those species - all three are regularly seen from land in September. The far west of Cornwall is your best bet, either Porthgwarra if the wind is south-westerly or Pendeen if it is west or north-west. Storm Petrels and Balearic Shearwaters tend to get less common later in the month.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines.

I'm sure there were some pelagics from western Wales at some point because we looked into it. I thought they were organised by Cambrian Bird Holidays but I can't find anything on their website about it so I may have got that wrong, or maybe don't run them any more. Pembrokeshire has some good seawatching points like Strumble Head as well but I'm not an expert in the area at all, someone else will be able to tell you much more.
For Roseate Tern, they breed at Coquet Island in Northumberland but access is much more restricted than the Farnes. I think there are boat trips round Coquet, and I've seen photos of post-breeding birds taken in the South Shields area too. Again it's not an area that I'm familiar with, though I'd like to try and get some Roseate shots myself! |

Strumble Head in September should give good results if the hours are put in but I don't think anybody runs pelagics in this area? I had Balearic Shearwater along with loads of Manx and Storm Petrel and Leach's last year and plan a couple of days sea watching here in September this year. Roseatte are turning up on the east coast at the moment but nothing seems to be sticking around long

Thank you for the answers!
I'll try roseate tern in Northumberland this weekend. I talked to a boatmen who organises tern watching which seems promising. Any seewatching opportunity nearby or along the east coast? Chances for balearic, sooty and storm-petrels this time of the year? Atka |

The Coquet Island Roseate Terns should be starting to spread out from the island now. They are much easier to see post-breeding when you can get them in any tern roost in the NE. St Mary's Island just N of Whitley Bay is very good as is Whitburn just N of Sunderland.
You'll struggle to get Balearic or Storm Petrel in this area though. Sooty Shearwater is likely if there is some decent seawatching weather. Cornwall is your best bet for all three (as already mentioned) |
