Hi all,
Had this duck at Snettisham RSPB this morning; https://twitter.com/Jonny09Jonny/sta.../photo/1/large I can see both pr Yellow-billed Teal and also Yellow-billed Pintail features! Can anyone confirm either way? Apols. for pic quality - was bodged with me phone and scope. Cheers, Jonny

Looks more like a Speckled Teal/Yellow Billed Teal to me rather than Yellow Billed Pintail.
Cheers Alan P.S Attached pictures of both Species www.surfbirds.com/community-blogs/falklandbirder |

The bill pattern does not really look right for either of Alan's suggestions.
Hybrid? We had a duck at Rutland Water this week which was initially thought to be a Red-billed Teal/Pintail but then we realised it had to be a hybrid. Steve |

Looks fine for Speckled Teal for me, the extent of the yellow being clear in the photo with grey at the end of the yellow bit not so clear but still there if you look closely

I was thinking that there was too much black along the top of the bill, the sort of thing that is often obvious in hybrids.
Could be wrong of course. Steve |

Judging by the Ogilvie and Young book which was the only wildfowl book I have to hand there are 3 or more subspecies so not sure if they vary in that department or not. You could well be right, just can't see any obvious signs from any other species

Thanks for the responses - so a Yellow Billed Teal (I see was formally known as Speckled Teal) or one of the three sub-species or even a hybrid!
Gotta love ducks ![]() Cheers, Jonny

Hi folks,
I thought I'd add a pic to the thread; photographed yesterday in Hampshire, UK. I'm fairly sure I know what it is, but thought I would invite comment... cheers, alan |
