Smile Hello from a new birdwatcher!

Hello to all! Since my 5-year-old daughter and I are very interested in our backyard birds, we decided to get a bird feeder. We purchased a Squirrel Buster Classic, filled it with wild bird seed feed, hung it up & now we are awaiting the arrival of some birds. This is our first bird feeder; we are newbies without much knowledge of wild birds. I did a little bit of research (about the types of birds found in our area & the best type of feeder to buy)before purchasing the feeder & seed, and we just signed up for the Cornell Lab's Project FeederWatch (starting in November). We are looking forward to learning about wild birds and watching the birds that visit our feeder. Any advice/suggestions are welcome! Thanks in advance!

Hi, Wendy,

From all the BirdForum Moderators and Administration, Welcome!

We are glad to have you join us in our appreciation of nature, especially wild birds.

We hope you find this site enjoyable and rewarding.

* Getting a Birds of North America Field Guide (Eastern version) would be a good start. A pair of binoculars would also be helpful to get you going with birding.
** Before long you may even find yourself going over to Jamaica Bay for some "away from the yard" birding!!

Hello Wendy, and welcome to you and your daughter. I'm sure you'll find us to be a fairly friendly group.

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome! Thank you, Larry, for the field guide & binocular advice. I purchased a few field guides (including one for 'young birders'), and I'm researching the binoculars. We had 2 visitors to our birdfeeder this morning...1 bird who perched on the pole (We have a deck rail-mounted pole/hook for our feeder.) but didn't fly to the feeder, and 1 squirrel who made it to the feeder but couldn't get to the food. (We have a Squirrel Buster feeder.) It's a start! :)
