Most difficult African birds

Hi all,

I was not sure where to ask this. I wonder, according to your experience, what are the most difficult birds to find in Africa; to limit, I suggest everyone give a maximum 10 species; all must be endemic to Africa.

As an example, one of my first would be Bate's Weaver. Despite having been several times to Cameroon where it is endemic, I didn't see any. What to do to see it? I'm not very sure... I'm not looking for birds with a tiny population, such Raso Lark, for which we just just need to get to the place...

Another example I have in mind is Shelley's Eagle-Owl.

Thanks for helping.

My bet is in the area half a degree south of latitude: 22° 31.944'N, whether on island sea cliffs, shoreline sea cliffs, or on inland cliffs, on either side of the Red Sea. The eastern side is probably much easier politically to survey, but there are ongoing political and ethnic sensitivities on the west side. However, it's also likely that any survey will turn up other unexpected findings...

How about Archer's Lark...were those Heteromirafra larks found in E Ethiopia ever nailed-down to species?

Well I've been to Africa once and I've seen Turner's Eremomela so it can't be that difficult. Very nice it was too.

Ah, but it's affording the company's 'standard fare' that is always the spanner in the works....double it, treble it, pick a number...any number!

Can I know which ones please? I'm not sure any trip are organised in Eastern RDC for Yellow-crested Helmet-Shrike...

It is exactly what I'm asking for: which species ARE NOT in any "standard fare" of any trip...

Thanks

Perhaps because no-one has asked us to move it

It's too difficult for me to know where it's best placed, so let me know and I'll oblige.

Fantastic picture, didnt know they are twitchable now, never seen a real live one!

Most of the flufftails are really tough, more due to nature than low population

Dear Paul,

It seems to be quite fairly in Bale Mountains; not 100% but high chances to find one if you make the effort of a night drive overthere...

Certainly not a bird for my "mega-tough-African-birds" list :).

Hi Delia

I'd say same place as Larry Lade's "Have you seen this..." thread lives but can't recall where that is...

After all...if we can't have order in the taxonomy section what hope is there?

McM
That'd be Birds and Birding then. OK I've had 3 votes for that forum, so I'll shift it there then.
