wow thats rare.

Did you send the picture to a local newspaper ? in the UK the local rags usually pay quite well for images that add to a good story like a rare sighting of something. You could have been famous Jeff

We've had a relatively warm, dry week so all bird visits have been well down on numbers but I just saw the first GSW for three days and it was 'our' male juvenile - with quite a few black streaks through his crown. So he may be a little younger than yours.

Nuthatch visits seem to be getting more regular again, but I haven't seen a robin in weeks. Hopefully just a case of not looking at the right times!

Nearly forgot - the better weather has been great for the local buzzards who seem to have been soaring and calling all week

and then the winter sets in....

Ok sorry folks.....

I have just found a file on the PC with a load of this fella. Last winter he took control of my garden and fought everything off that attempted to get at the apples. He would guard and fight rather than eat.... brilliant to watch

I had left my feeders empty for a while as they kept filling up with water during the last bad spell of rain we had, filled them back up yesterday and they are being used once again. Plenty of Blue tits around, a good number of youngsters included to. Also a nice party of around 12 Long Tailed Tits through today. Great spotted is getting closer, it was 4 houses away sitting on top of a pole calling away, would be great to get it visiting again.

I am a bit stumped, with my feeder. No matter what I put out, I seem to get LOADS of house sparrows (adults and juveniles), and the occasional house finch. I mostly feed pre-shelled black oil sunflower seed. For a while, I tried a sunflower-and-nyjer mix, in hopes of getting more finches, but the sparrows ate the nyjer, too. For the last few days, I have also been feeding suet, in hopes of attracting the woodpeckers I've seen on neighbouring roofs, but the sparrows are even messing with that!

I know there are other birds in my area...is there anything I can do to attract them? My feeders are on a balcony on the 5th floor.

In the meantime, I've been amusing myself trying to get pictures of that flappy-winged little dance the young sparrows do when they want to be fed.

Wow - impressive stuff

The Rowan trees are now full of berries (although for the 3rd 'autumn' our tree still hasn't thought it worth the effort). The Blackbirds have started stripping the neighbours' bare - I doubt it will take long.

Had a solitary siskin at the feeders over the weekend, either a juvenile or a female, never got a great look.

All the usual suspects eating me out of house and home apart from that !!

In my experience, House Sparrows will eat just about anything and once they find your feeders, they tend not to go away. You could try one of those blocks of woodpecker food (without a cage) to see if they don't like or can't handle that.

The family of three Tufted Titmice that turned up more than a week ago is still with us.

I put a hummingbird feeder up yesterday because it's migration time for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. A female appeared right away. Within an hour this male also came to feed.

Rapid results like that are the business! Forgive my ignorance, but how does a hummingbird feeder work? I presume its got some kind of nectar in it, but how do you stop it pouring out of its own accord? (Sorry, only boring seed and lard feeders here)

Just been watching the Siskins and some of the juveniles are moulting, with streaky yellow-green patches underneath. The Magpies also have much shorter tails than normal, so I guess they are going through a moult too.
