Owl ID Help PLEASE - New Orleans, LA - 8/20/12

Hello All,

Any assistance with identifying this owl that my wife and I spotted in our Crape Myrtle Tree this evening would be greatly appreciated. We live in a suburban part of New Orleans, and have never seen an owl in our front yard before.

We were taking our dog for a walk and as soon we stepped onto our front porch we heard the wildest bird call. It sounded like a horse neighing. It was very loud, prominent and chatty, but, it wasn't a sharp sound either.

The owl had bright yellow eyes, which unfortunately washed out in the photo due to the flash light I was shining into the tree. It wasn't a very big bird either, I would estimate it being approximately 12-15 inches tall.

Thank you for your time.

Best,

JD

Thank you so much for your quick responses everyone. I do believe you all have correctly identified our little friend in the front yard last night.

We definitely heard the "B Call" according to this website.

Thanks again!
