thats what we reckoned we saw it from flashes main hide, as i left i flushed it from between the two hides were it had come down, but as far as i was concerned it was a marsh harrier.

Hi Trace - what time did you see the harrier? Did anyone else get on it?

Stuart Andrews also got a picture.

Having checked Forsmans, it may be 2nd calendar year or older.

Nice one, Brian. That view certainly shows more extensive pale areas. The coverts are still dark - I guess these take several years to become paler and more adult-like and there is a lot of individual variation.

Any more tips in Forsman's to ageing MH's?

Given that the Harrier was seen to land, were the appropriate phone calls made?

Hi Chris,

I doubt there was any malicious suppression going on - it seems the observers more likely weren't completely sure of the ID or maybe weren't aware of the significance (I think this is only the 3rd or 4th record of MH at Upton this year).

I'd have thought you'd have jumped at the chance to get some more stats on here, but you've really let yourself down. For shame

I apologise if I have mis-read the question but this question seems to imply that there is a requirement for obsevers to phone in all unusual sightings.

As stated by others, in numerous earlier postings, I do not consider the Upton Warren forum to be an information service. If I required up to date info then I would be subscibing to one of the recognised providers.

I see it as being down to the individual as to whether / how they decide to disemminate their sightings and have no problems if observers choose not to do so based on either lack of confidence, ecomonic restraints or any other reason.

The Tuesday work party have opened the view in front of the new Moors hide, resited the feeders, removed & resited one screen & constructed another. As well as cutting back the vegetation that was encroaching on the Salwarpe track & re-routing some sections of the path where the river bank has been eroded. There is more work needed to complete all this section.

These 5 images show the areas in front of & round the hide before being worked on. 3, 4, & 5 show the view (or should that be lack of a view) from the downstairs windows.

These images show the view from downstairs after the work parties efforts.

1. The re-sited screen
2, 3, & 4 show the re-sited feeders & the views from the front windows.
5. The view from the right-hand window.

The clue, is in word phone in the question. There is a request in the Upton log to report unusual sightings to one of several phone numbers provided so that the news can be disseminated quickly,a long standing arrangement.

There was no suggestion that the Upton Warren Forum be an information service,so you have mis-read the question.Incidentally i do subscribe to Rare Bird Alert.

Hi Dave,

I'm sure you are right,I didn't think for one moment there was any suppression
going on,i'm just keen to keep the "news" as current as possible as it usually is.

maliceous or not!

i photo'd the bird initially from the main flashes hide and thought it was a marsh harrier i showed the others in the hide but was'nt completly confident, when i set off back it took off from half way between the two hides may have been sat on or near fence on flashes side of track it circled round a few times and was joined by a buzzard also circling this only added to the confusion, it then went off towards the moors i nipped round asked if anyone had seen it but the answer was no, it was mentioned in conversation but nothing said as to reporting it anywhere. if i had reported it and it was a buzzard i'd look a right twonk, if i wait to get a picture checked which i gather caused a little confusion i look a twonk. can someone who knows what he's doing please follow me round all day in future! lesson learn't if in doubt i'll text or bell john (upstart) in future. hope that explains it a bit clearer for all concerned.

Sorry to disappoint Phil - had a few more pressing issues y'day (completing on our new house, the missus' 34 week scan etc)
