Damselfly sp, Cambs, UK

Hi all,

I'm just sorting through the hundreds of pics I've taken locally this summer and came across this, which I have to be honest didn't get more than a few seconds look in the field when I saw it. I took this on the evening of 1st July at Paxton Pits when damsels were settled in still conditions and I was concentrating more on aesthetic pictures rather than ID.

I'm annoyed with myself for not following up on its ID and now wonder if it could be an immature Small red-eyed Damsel.

Opinions welcomed.

Stu

Hi Stuart

It's a young male Red-eyed Damselfly - note the lack of antehumeral stripes and its robustness. You would also expect to see some blue (purple here) on the side of S8 from this angle if it were a Small Red-eyed.

Paul, that's brilliant, thank you very much.

I have a female dragonfly I'm struggling with from earlier in the year. Can I PM you?

On second thoughts I better send it through the forum in case you can't ID it. It reminded me of a Club-tailed sp I've seen in Eastern Europe, but nearest UK sp I could get to is along the lines of female/young Scarce Chaser (but could be miles off...)

Here's another damsel - this time fairly nondescript, photographed at the Ouse Washes this weekend.

Hmm. Wearing camouflage paint, eh?

I reckon that's a female emerald damselfly which has been laying eggs - I've never seen it personally, but the book says they sometimes go fully under water which would account for the coating of silt.

Hi Stu, Swindon Addick correct on last ID. Had up to 18 in recent weeks on my new garden pond and as SA said, females (not just of this species) can submerge themselves totally to lay their eggs
