Looking for "Butcher bird"
Sorry for the "candid" question
A local friend watching at one of my photos on the screen has said to me: —"This is a nice butcher bird"! Before to post my photo on these forums "to be credible", I look everywhere to give the right info for the "butcher bird", but I have seen so different birds of mine that I am confused as shape, body and colours.Could someone show or post what look or what make a bird a "butcher bird"? I have a few photo, I will post later if they match "yours" Thank you for your help! Please disgard my post if no interest for the communauty lebororo

Hi Lebororo,
'Butcher Bird' is a common name given it seems fairly widely to members of the Shrike family (butcher bird reflects its habit of impaling its prey—small birds, mammals and large insects—on a thorn, twig or barbed wire before tearing it apart ). That would probably explain the variety of hits that you get on a google etc search. As far as I know however shrikes are not found in Australia or S America. Luke edit: apologies - it appears butcher bird is also used to descriibe some birds of the family Artamidae in Australia. I better let an Aussie or someone who knows there birds better talk you through the various species. Last edited by streatham : Monday 21st March 2005 at 00:17. |

Butcherbirds are members of the family Artamidae - including Woodswallows, Australian Magpie and Currawongs. One of the distinguishing features of this family (with the exception of the Currawongs) is they have a silver-grey bill with a black tip.
Butcherbirds' bills look like a cross between a magpie and a kingfisher bill. They're about 25-30 cm in body length and have a fluting melodious call. There are several different species, but the two most likely if you live on the East coast of Australia are Grey Butcherbird, or Pied Butcherbird.

Gud day! everybody
Lost my message grrrrr! Thanks Gasshead and Stuart for you input I thinkt that my 'birds' could fit in this category, I am absolutely "zero" in bird knowledge" and I have not enough time to share with everyboby passion thru these forums... I don't want to post in the gallery as I don't know the type of birds on my photo.. http://www.pbase.com/lebororo/image/38901838 " a close-up " http://www.pbase.com/lebororo/image/37550807 " a juvenile " http://www.pbase.com/lebororo/image/24784683 " one other juvenile" and may be, it is not a magpie http://www.pbase.com/lebororo/image/37076653 a juvenile but ??? thanks lebororo
