Mallorca 2017 (5 Viewers)

Indeed, thank you Maties for your and your team’s hard work. This new hide and islands will no doubt be a great addition to the quality of the bird life, birding and photography around s’Albufereta.

Betlem-Arta Mountains

After continuous rain it was great to walk outside in the Sunshine.

Birds seen in this area included: Booted Eagles(4), Ravens(14), Blue Rock Thrushes, many song thrushes, sardinian warblers, robins and Stonechats.

Eddie Watkinsons Bird Guide indicates that this area is good for Balearic Warblers, however I have never seen or heard them in this region. Anybody seen them here?

On a sad note saw my first MALLORCAN HEDGEHOG (ATELERIX ALGIRUS VAGANS) but it was obviously suffering and may not survive long.

Hi Mike
I have seen hedgehogs many times. Is there more than one species do you know?
If so, is Mallorcan hedgehog rare and presumably indigenous? Thanks, I am back on Tuesday and have to do some serious birding to reach my target of 200. Hope to see you. Mike

Hi Mike, no, I have not seen Common Crane yet this year but they are just in. 49 at Salobrar de Campos and 83 over Cabrera.
Also, the murmurations of Common Starling are now peaking, best viewed from Cami des Polls, Albufera. Mike

Sunday morning walk around S’Albuferata.

Birds seen included Greater Flamingos (approx.120), Marsh Harriers, Osprey, Kestrals, Great Egret, Little Egret and Cattle Egrets, Purple Herons, Greenshank, Goldfinches,Lapwings, Cetti and Sardinian Warblers, Chiffchaff and WaterRails.

Red Admiral, Large White, Brimstone and small Copper Butterflies.

Not bad for a November Sunday

Hi - there are quite a few records of Brimstone from the Balearic Islands but hardly any of these are confirmed - either by photos or specimens. Most are of female Cleopatras.

Martin

Today, in the zone of Lluc, we (Maties, Carlos, Nacho, Joan Manuel and me) have had the look to see one very rare bird in Majorca, one yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella). the bird was about 150 m from us, but he was very quiet on a fig-tree and we saw several minutes.

There are 5 previous homologated observations in the islands, so it would be the 6th.

The picture was done with a phone on the scope and it is from Carlos Lopez-Jurado.

There were also at least 10 bramblings

Very Windy on the Island

A short walk alomg Maristany..The waters are now full..

Birds seen included Pochards, Gadwalls, Little Grebes, Fan tailed and Sardinian warblers, Common sandpiper.

Phil found a male Brambling at finca publica Galatzo yesterday, they are very scarce here. I will be doing the walk from Lluc monastery this coming Sunday and I will be hoping for wintering thrushes, finches and maybe even that ultra rare Yellowhammer! Mike

Afternoon visit to Amarador Albufera and the Depuradora

Sunny afternoon visit - Birds seen included:

Great, Little and Cattle Egrets, Marsh Harriers (5), Kestrals, Peregrine, Green and Common Sandpipers, Purple Gallinule, Red-Crested Pochards, Shellducks, Gadwall, Lapwings, Cetti and Fantailed Warblers, Tree sparrows, Stonechats and surprisingly waxbills(42).

About 500,000 Starlings went to roost without the murmurations at the Depuradora..Sigh

Mike, a lady thought she saw a red footed falcon around the park. I thought it was too late and they have left..any comments?

Hi Mike. No idea what the falcon was, only likely candidate would be Merlin. I can’t think what else it could be, Kestrel? Nothing else around and last dates for Eleonora’s seem to all be in October.
Well done with the Waxbills, a good total.
Still some sightings of Hawfinch around the Island.
Mike

Thats what I thought..Several Kestrels were in the park. Glad you agree with photos /ID. 8-P

A species of Pelican was at the salt pans this afternoon. As I was birding there until lunchtime, I am a bit miffed. By the time I drove straight back there, it had flown.
Still, it’s quite a big bird and if it hangs around, I’m sure it will be relocated. It flew towards Sa Barrala. Mike

Crossbills, Blackcaps, Sardinian Warblers, Greenfinches, Great tits, Firecrests, Robins, Yellow legged Gulls.

A really nice day out with Mike and Susan McSwiss at Porto Colom.
Firstly, around the coastal scrub, we logged at least three Dartford warblers, several Balearic warblers and close up Fan-tailed warblers.
Later, on the sea watch we saw three Northern Gannet, a raft of interesting ducks which remain unidentified as does the distant auk species which whizzed along the horizon. Seawatching here can be great but it’s also very frustrating with many interesting looking species too far away to be sure of clinching a safe ID.
Thanks for the lunch Susan, Mallorca at its brilliant best with glorious blue skies and far-reaching coastal views. Mike
