Lowland Akalat subspecies (1 Viewer)

We've all browsed through HBW Vol.10 by now, right ? Every time I receive a volume I check it with my world checklist (J.F.Clements, fifth edition, 2000) which I update as much as I can. When I checked the entry of the Lowland Akalat in Clements I found a personally written addition of a new subspecies (Sheppardia cyornithopsis pallidigularis), described either after the publication of Clements or after it's cut-off date. I was surprised that it wasn't even mentioned in HBW Vol. 10. Normally this series is perfectly updated and usually even depicts these new races. I had a vague recollection of writing it down sometime in the late nineties, I guess. I thought it was described in the Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club, but paging through the back issues I could not find it, nor anywhere else. So, my question is does anyone know where and when this subspecies was described ? Or if it was described at all, I could have made a mistake.

Hi Hidde,

Don't know about the BOU Bulletin but your new subspecies (Sheppardia cyornithopsis pallidigularis) doesn't appear in the on-line updates for Supplement to Birds of the World: A Checklist by James F. Clements. Fifth Edition. 2000.

The on-line update does include new subspecies Sheppardia gunningi alticola to East Coast Akalat and new species Rubeho Akalat (Sheppardia aurantiithorax).

Hidde,
The putative race pallidigularis originally described in: Cunningham-van Someren, G.R., & H. Schifter, 1981. New races of montane birds from Kenya and southern Sudan.--- Bull. Brit. Orn. Cl., 101 (3): 347-354, (4) 355-363. The Authors in this treatise associated this putative race to Lowland Akalat (Sheppardia cyornithopsis).

The race was reviewed here: Oatley, T.B. et al, 1992. Various species accounts. In "The Birds of Africa". Vol. 4: i-xv, 1-609 (S. Keith, E.K. Urban & C.H. Fry, eds.) --- Academic Press Inc., San Diego.

The latter work maintained that it is not enough genetically dissimilar from the pre-existing nominate race of Equatorial Akalat. Therefore, it is now considered as submerged within Sheppardia aequatorialis aequatorialis.

Hope this helps.
