The Greenland Institute of Natural Ressources and The North Atlantic Marine Mammals Commission (NAMMCO) has recommended a maximum annual catch of 135 narwhals in West Greenland in order to maintain the current population. The West Greenlandic narwhal population has, in some areas, decreased by 50% in the past 20 years. Main cause to decreased population is excessive hunting exceeding the population sustainability of the narwhals in the region.
