We found a baby robin today that appears to have fallen out of the nest. He is able to move his right wing around meaning he is able to spread it out and pull it back in. There does seem to be a couple of feahers missing. We would estimate he has about 90% use of the wing. However, he is not able to fly. His right foot has the claws curled in and doesn't seem to be able to straighten them out. He will stand on the leg but he hops around on one leg. He doesn't straighten out his right leg claws.
We have put the robin in a pet carrier that we have. We have a couple of wild cats in the neighborhood and we didn't want them to hurt the robin. We also made a piece of cardboard that we put on the bottom of his leg and claws to help hold them out straight. It is a splint. We have the cardboard attached to the robin's leg with small twist ties (without hard wire in them). We also gave him a drink of water. We tried to fid him some pieces of worms but he didn't seem interested.
Are we doing the right thing? Do you think by putting the splint on his foot that the claws will go straight out like normal again? Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can care for the robin and not hurt him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
