V3 and 70-300CX lens images (1 Viewer)

The V3 and 70-300CX vr lens is very sharp wide open, fast AF with good acquisition and tracking for birds in flight. Images in good light where cropping need not be more than 50% are very good. Noise is less than the V1 and resolution significantly better.
It has become my dog walking and travel combo. It is also good for birds in flight and this week captured red kites in flight with more ease than the D810 and 300m f4 I had with me, when the birds were closer.
I have posted several images on my FlickR V3 and V1 gallery.

FlickR images

Thanks for posting, Rich, looks like a handy P&S combo.

Pasquier,
I've just realised that it is difficult for some to see original images on Flickr.
Have you looked at any of the originals on my link ? It's just that I feel my images are more than point and shoot and when I looked today, after Flickr has messed around twice with the format that even I have difficulty seeing my originals. I'd be glad if you can check please.

Btw your other post with a link to Joe Marquez images is excellent. I have not got that clean and fine detail unless the bird fills the frame.

Hi Rich,
my P&S usage was probably incorrect … no intended in a disparaging manner ….I refer to my D7100 / AFS80-400 as my P&S kit.
Your photos on Flickr look good, I'm impressed with the kites, but I agree one need to have full frame images for fine feather detail.
Best, P :t:

Looking good Rich. A great walking around combo. Why "closer"? Isn't the reach of both combos about the same? (pixels on bird)
Neil.

I wish there was a lens for the m4/3 system similar in reach to the cx lens at 300 (>800 mm equivalent?).

Neil,
thanks for the query. When I looked at my post I noticed that I wrote 300mm f4 where in fact I mean't 300 f2.8.
To answer your question now, the V3 combo is way more manoeuvrable than the D810/300f2.8 and these birds are fast and changing direction. Secondly I was zoomed back to 150-200mm when close on the V3. Can't do that on a prime 300.
Hope that is clearer.
Cheers

Rich,
You're right about the 300/2.8 afs. It's probably the best Nikon lens I have and the one I use the least. Two heavy to walk around with and two short for our local wetlands.
Neil.

Niels,
The Panasonic 100-300 mm lens is surprisingly good for the price. The AF is not all that fast though.

Thanks Neil,
I am currently using that lens. What I was really asking was for one with a little more reach, say a 150-400 lens with updated optics. It does not have to be a fantastically fast lens but something going to either 400 F5.6 or 400 F6.3 would work I believe.

The last few hundred pictures in my BF gallery is with the GH2 + 100-300: http://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/500/ppuser/7427

I was very surprised by the 80-400/afs . It was much better than the older AF version. I used it in Botswana last year and it was great for birds and animals.

With the V3 you have a lot of reach.
Neil.
