Birdwatching sites Taoyuan area (1 Viewer)

I shall be visiting Taiwan on a business trip very shortly and will be staying in the Monarch Plaza hotel in Taoyuan.
I am hopeful to get a bit of time to perhaps do a little birdwatching / photography and would appreciate any suggestions of any sites or locations that might be worth visiting.
I will be restricted to using local transport such as taxi / MRT etc so something in the local area is preferable.
My main interest is photography as opposed to seeing lots of species so anywhere that might allow good opportunities of birds etc that are relatively confiding would be ideal as I shall be limited to using a medium 300mm telephoto lens.

Any help or ideas much appreciated - Thanks

You may have already passed through, and I haven't been in Taiwan for over a year now, but personally I found birding in Taoyuan to be pretty disappointing. I went to the beach area (Dayuan) and its really quite dirty. Did see some birds, however, including black-bellied and kentish plover, greater painted snipe, and vinous-throated parrotbill.
If you can swing it, I much preferred birding nearer downtown Taipei, at the Botanical Garden, Guandu, and Huajiang.

You might also try to get to Wulai. I don't know if there are buses from Taoyuan, but you can definitely get there on public transport from Taipei.

A local photographer has a hide close to Taoyuan that regularly gets Chinese Bamboo Partridge, Taiwan Scimitar-Babbler and Slaty-legged Crake amongst others. 300mm should be about perfect. He charges a small fee as it's on private property. I can message you his phone number if you are interested, although he probably only speaks Chinese.

Cheers

Dave
