Ringed Med Gull

I found this juvenile Med Gull on my local patch at the end of July. I've received more details today. It originated from Denmark, south of Odense, and was seen on the Wirral only a couple of days ago. Glad to know it's still going strong.

We've had a male Mallard with a nasal saddle in Jersey for the last few weeks. It was ringed and tagged as a juvenile at the end of December 2012 near Aveiro, about half-way down the coast of Portugal. Rather an interesting record!

Two dutch-scheme colour-ringed Spoonbill in North Devon at the minute. Also wondering if anyone would like to speculate on which national scheme is behind this combination I saw (and have reported to EURING) for Black-headed Gull:

* Metal ring on right tibia (got some of the ring number)
* (Dark) green colour ring on right tarsus, white letter (E in this case).

It's not on cr-birding site so far as I can see.

Here's a wealth of info on a Black-tailed Godwit which I saw at Bowling Green Marsh in September:

Thank you for the sighting. this bird was ringed as chick in 1999, by Tómas Gunnarsson. Topline is the ringing information.

Thanks again

I too have a list of CR birds, mainly gulls, from my patch in S. Bucks, but also the odd wader. What I find frustrating is the occasional lack of response from supposed ringers/scheme administrators which makes you wonder what the point of the original ringing was. I have several outstanding rings - from memory (amongst others) a Dutch BHG and a couple of K T Pedersen BHGs, but also a Jackdaw which looks to be administered at Cambridge Uni and a Lapwing, which looks to be German. This last bird I have mailed all the likely addresses several times and have also tried the wader study group site, but have had no response. I would be particularly grateful if someone could offer any help with the Lapwing - it's been bugging me! The CR details are:

A yellow ring above the knee on both legs. On the left ankle it had green over orange and on the right ankle it had a metal ring over red.

Cheers, Adam

I agree with Adam about the frustration caused by ringing scheme contacts not replying to reports of their birds. Currently I am waiting for replies to all six Little Egrets I have reported this year, plus a load of Black-headed and LBB Gulls from someone already mentioned in Adam's post, and also another lot of LBBs.

But most people I send stuff to do reply promptly (and Jenny Gill for Black-tailed Godwits is phenomenal) and are very grateful for the time and effort that ring-readers put in.

Steve

ADB, I assume you've put the Lapwing through EURING? They'll be able to chase people with a bit more leverage perhaps. Best of luck, a German lapwing would have me jumping for joy.

Actually I hadn't until this morning. As I pretty much always use the cr-birding site, I'd forgotten to use this route. This thread reminded me and I filled a form in today and await to see if that helps.

Cheers, Adam

Hi All
A timely update from Essex tip watching - been reading between a dozen and twenty rings each session; mainly local birds but rings in the last fortnight have come from Belgium, northeast Scotland and Norway.

Most interesting though was a Polish-ringed 2nd-winter Caspian Gull that was ringed at Jankowice, Żwirownia as a nestling on 29th May 2012; remarkably I visited this exact colony with its ringer in June this year! My sighting (on Saturday just gone) was in its seventh country in just over a year and a half - after Poland, it was seen in Denmark in August 2012, Sweden in September 2012, The Netherlands in March 2013, Belgium in April 2013, Germany in August 2013, again in Sweden in September 2013 before heading to Essex for December...

Cheers
Rich

Frustration isn't the word, I am currently awaiting life history on 2 LBBG from Iceland.:smoke:

Having a great winter in Weymouth for Med Gull ring sightings. Since the start of october I'm getting somewhere near 70 or 80 sightings of probably 40 odd birds. So far countries of origin have been France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Serbia, Hungary and my first from Italy!

old Med Dec 2013.jpg

This adult Med Gull was first ringed in the Netherlands in June 1990 and was present again today in Lancashire where I`ve seen it for most of the last seven winters. It`s still going strong despite now only having one leg!

Ringed Black-headed Gull

I realise this is a long shot, but does anyone have an idea of the origins of this ring on a Black-headed Gull? It isn`t a British one,

cheers, Pete.ringed BHg.jpg

Hi Pete - This is actually a German bird, from the Hiddensee scheme. On the top row of the address you can just about read 'RTE HIDDE' which would be 'VOGELWARTE HIDDENSEE' and under that (with a bit of imagination) reads GERMANIA. Compare to the pic below.

The rings follow the sequence of two letters and six numbers, and yours would be -- -082-- so a few too many missing digits to trace unfortunately.

Mark Grantham - BTO
