Surrey UK Red stripe on head (1 Viewer)

Can anyone identify a bird with a broad red stripe on its head for me? - about the size of a starling with light brown plumage, red stripe across the top of its head, not a cap, on the grass in the garden yesterday morning!

I have looked at pictures Redpolls (too small) and Linnetts (closer, but beak was much finer like a thrush)

Could it have been a Green Woodpecker? Larger than a Starling, and much larger than the finches that you have looked up but one of the few birds with red on its head.

If it was finch sized then Goldfinch might be a better bet.

Green Woodpecker!

Well, it LOOKED brown, but now I've checked it out on the database, it's got to have been a Green Woodpecker, as the beak is just right. Thanks.
