Not much of a real start due to family commitments, and the foul weather means I have started my birding mostly from the car. I had 100 county species last year (my first year - started off only knowing a couple of dozen species!), so I hope to see more this year.

Jan 1st
Garden:

1. House Sparrow
2. Starling
3. Blue Tit
4. Great Tit
5. Robin
6. Carrion Crow
Seafront: (20 yards from home)
7. Black-headed Gull
8. Herring Gull
9. Dunlin
10. Ringed Plover
11. Sanderling
12. Turnstone

2nd Jan:
(From the car en route to Chelmsford):
13. Cormorant (on top of lamp post on High Bridge Road Chelmsford!)
14. Wood Pigeon
15. Feral Pigeon

4th Jan:

17. Coot
18. Mute Swan
19. Little Grebe

20. Blackbird
21. Magpie
22. Collared Dove
23. Curlew (flyover)
24. Goldfinch
Seafront:
25. Brent Goose
Old Leigh:
26. Oystercatcher
27. Redshank
28. Little Egret
29. Pied Wagtail
Two Tree Island (bridge over the creek):
30. Moorhen
31. Teal
32. Heron
Seafront (again - on way home):
33. Mediterranean Gull

Not many compared to some listers here, but that's already a third of my last year's total. Just waiting for some better weather. It was very relaxing to get a few hours to myself though!

Not too well today so stayed in car again, drove to Wallasea Island and saw the following on the road in and in the car park:

34. Lapwing
35. Corn Bunting
36. Great Black-backed Gull (it was huge!)
37. Hen Harrier (ringtail) - Lifer!
38. Kestrel (two)
(Also saw Little Egret, a Heron next to the road which I managed to flush on way in and again on way out.)

Already have over a third of my last year's total, but I know a bit better what I'm actually seeing now - got the Corn Bunting straight away - last year it took me months to realize that my photo of a 'Skylark' was actually a Corn Bunting.
