AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6E ED VR (1 Viewer)

I tested the Nikon TC E14111 (1.4x) teleconverter today on the 200-500/5.6. Of course this meant that the f stop dropped to f8 so focusing with the D7200 was a bit slow but better than I expected. This combo would like good light , which we didn't have much of today, but I was quite impressed with the detail in flat light and full zoom at 1050 mm equivalent.

I took the 200-500/5.6 back out to the wetlands yesterday. I was able to get photos of birds at long distance that I've not been able to get with such detail before. The AF does a great job of locking on and staying locked on.
The Black Kite photo is from Lamma Island this morning with the Nikon TC E14111.

Nikon is terrific... I had the Tamron 150-600, which I was pleased with until somebody lent me their Nikon 200-500... I had one myself a few days later.
Difficult to tell if the extra 100mm on the Tamron really was an extra 100mm... I certainly don't miss it.
Shooting on a D7100... Not too bad carrying it with a sling strap attached to the tripod bush on the lens..

I was out yesterday and kept thinking that I wasn't up to it as I seemed to have a bit of trouble even finding the BIFs , never mind focusing on them.It was only when I got home that I realized that I had my 1.4x on from the previous day ! So i was had holding 700mm and didn't even notice - what an idiot :smoke:

Nice job of the owl in flight Les. Turned out well with the 1.4x tele on. You've inspired me to try the 1.4x tomorrow.

I've been shooting the 200-500/5.6 with the D5 over the last few weeks although I didn't take it on my recent trip to the US for the warblers as it's a bit heavy to carry around all day with bins and a scope.
The D5 drives it very fast and the balance is good. It's a bit noisy for closeups though compared to the D810 and D7200.
Here are some recent ones from the pond. I'm liking the colour out of the D5.

I wasn't sure the 200-500/5.6 and the 1.7x would AF but in good light it was ok, although it's at f10.

Just got myself one of these lenses, and I'm pretty happy with it! Can I ask what you all use for weather proofing? Ideally i'd like a toploader bag to totally enclose the kit as I'm often walking through long wet grass, but any other suggestions would be welcome!
Here of some of my recent favorites with the 200-500 and my d7200.
I think its a great combination. I got the d7200 before the D500 was available. If I was doing it today, I'd love to have the D500/200-500 combo, though the D7200 is certainly no slouch.

Dundee Birding....(target 150 in 2024).
I currently have a Tamron 150-600 which I use on a D500. There is slight movement between the body and the lens which sometimes means I miss the shot (had the same problem with Sigma 50-500 (x3), and an earlier 150-600 too on the D500 and other Nikon bodies). As I am finding this increasingly frustrating I started thinking about the 200-500. With it being a Nikon lens there should be a perfect fit, so no more losing connection at the wrong times. However, I read a few reviews online and they mention the 200-500 does have issues at times with focus on birds in flight. As this is where I'm missing shots with the 150-600 problem, I don't want to splash out and find that I still miss the shots because of focus issues of a different sort.
Those that have the lens already what is your experience of photographing birds in flight (and not just the bigger/slower moving ones - I take flight shots of Goldcrests and upwards, though usually for ID or record shots for my blog) using it? The pics on here look good, but I don't always get the blue sky/sun combination so a lot of my shots are in pretty poor light, or on overcast days. I'm especially interested in the opinions of those who may have switched from a Tamron 150-600, an/or use it in conjunction with a D500.

Hello Baz. I'm sorry this is a few days after your question but I can give you some ideas from my experience. I got the Nikkor 200-500 last year and it performed better than I was expecting. I'm used to 400mm on both FX and Dx cameras so I found the extra weight and narrower field of view bit of a challenge. That said, I can't really say it has failed me. I haven't used it in dull winter light yet but it thrilled me around 630am looking into the sun when both my D7100 and lens locked onto a Pacific Baza doing a flyby right between me and the sun. I adjusted the shadows in Lightroom but the setup managed to capture the right information. That said, I feel in grey/overcast situations a 300 f4 might be better. I also still love 400mm with a wider field of view and less weight for close encounters with birds in flight. Jack-be-nimble!

Thanks for the info, Stoop. I've decided to hold off for now on getting a 200-500mm. If the price drops (or I can pick up a 2nd hand copy) I might yet get one, but I'm gonna persevere for now with the Tamron.
I recently shot the 200-500/5.6 on the Nikon D3s for fun. These Dollarbirds were up high and about 50 metres away. The lens was wide open at 500mm. I was surprised how good a job it did. The uncrossed version is a jpeg straight from the camera.
